low oil pressure STOP, oil pump?
57 plate 2.0 tdi BKP
had a warning light come on the car yesterday and when idling and you rev over 2500 youll hear like a crunching noise. is it likely to be a rounded hex spindle? i know it had a problem with the oil pump 4 years ago just before we bought the car but not sure what the actually changed on it at the time. if it is just a rounded spindle again what would the fix be? a new oil pump crank sproket kit? am i right in thinking there is a way to inspect the spindle without taking the sump off?

Re: low oil pressure STOP, oil pump?
The sump has to come off, I would stop running it!

Re: low oil pressure STOP, oil pump?
Attachment 35778is this the kit i need? once the sump is off is it quite an easy job? ive had a look at a few videos and it said that its either the hex shaft that wears or the teeth on the big sproket. if i wanted to inspect the big sproket would i have to take the sump off as well?

57 plate would most likely have gear driven unit so chain driven kit not correct unless you want to convert back which is possible but a whole different job. It is likely the shaft hole is already damaged and changing the hex bar only not advisable. It may have a 100mm bar but an inferior shaft repair hence has failed again (like mine did again after 40k of use). Could still be the 77mm bar which means the 100mm would not fit anyway as the balance shaft needs to be re-engineered properly to a deeper hexagonal key hole.
Kit 9 from KMB Direct most likely
Oil Pumps from KMB Parts Direct specialist Oil pump replacement parts, Audi 2.0tdi, VW 2.0tdi, engines, support, help, advice, Sheffield, UK, England.
Done a few of these now so help available if you need it.
Sump has to come off no matter what and uses special sealant not a preformed gasket.

kit 9 isnt compatible with BKP though. what about kit 8?
-
Re: low oil pressure STOP, oil pump?
If after you've pulled the sump you see a gear driven unit it will be kit 9. KMB state the engine codes quoted are a guide only as there are overlaps between versions. BKP have either depending on year.
Just to clarify my earlier comment I fitted a NON KMB shaft the first time around as it was cheaper - only lasted 40k. Now have a KMB Direct balance shafts which I expect to last the remaining life of the car for sure.

Re: low oil pressure STOP, oil pump?
ok thanks. would VW be able to tell me if its gear or chain driven? ive been quoted £376 by a garage to do it but they didnt actually say in the email if that was + vat or if parts were included. i would have assumed theyve priced for chain driven. also i read that the sump is different depending if its chain or gear driven?

Yes VW should be able to confirm chain or gear from VIN. Not seen any BKP of your year with chain so far.

Re: low oil pressure STOP, oil pump?
Don't drive it at all. If you do you risk destroying your top end of the engine and turbo. Best to take to the garage, have them take sump off, fit new uprated balance shaft and buy the balance shaft locking tool. You'll also need new balance shaft securing bolts and a circlip. Make sure you take it someone who is aware of what's involved in the job. I doubt £376 is the bill of everything included.

Attachment 35779just got this from them so it doesnt look like theyve given me a price for the correct part, thats just the oil pump and not the kit or balance shaft

Wrong job - not likely to be anything wrong with the oil pump itself so no, this garage does not know the likely cause of the low oil pressure warning. Very outside chance of it being a failed oil pump or even failed oil pressure sensor but from what you have said about the sounds you heard and our experience of these engines tells most on here that it is likely to be the balance shaft and oil pump DRIVE bar.
Visual inspection the only way to confirm.

Re: low oil pressure STOP, oil pump?
It will be gear driven , Kit 9 .
-
Re: low oil pressure STOP, oil pump?
The only way you will know what to do is by dropping the sump. You have stated it has been worked on in this area before so no one has any idea what is in there
-
Re: low oil pressure STOP, oil pump?
Hello aj1soad
If that light as come up on your dash. I would suggest you do not drive the car. You could be destroying your turbo and engine.
You will not be able to see the Allen key without taking off the sump. As it is within the balance shaft . That key is what spins the oil pump.
I am not as knowledgable as some people on here but I have done the replacement Allen key on My 08 Passat .
You will get some help from someone soon
I hopes this helps

Re: low oil pressure STOP, oil pump?
I have the same problem with my car oil pump failure 🤦*♂️... Mine is an auto 2007 dsg... I've only just had mine replaced and a month later the oil pressure light has come on again 😔 don't know why it is failing or there could be other internal problems...

Re: low oil pressure STOP, oil pump?
So the actual oil pump cassette and drive key .
You didn't address where the other end of the key goes , the balancer shaft keyway which would of been worn inside .

The oil pump itself would most likely be fine and not have needed to be replaced. Probably changed a good oil pump for a new oil pump when it was the balance shaft and Allen key that needed replacing.
I have a BMR and have done the job myself quite a few times now and for friends and workmates if you need further DIY help or have any questions.

You'll need a bit more than that
Timing locking tools including balance shaft alignment block
New balance unit mounting bolts (8 total but 3 sizes)
Elring Dirko HT sealant for sump
New retaining circlip for Allen bar
Don't get the balance shaft alignment block piece from KMB as it is far cheaper elsewhere and even comes in some of the PD timing tool kits which strangely often only have one cam lock pin not two in those ones? Bit odd but it is what it is.

sealant isn't a problem i have some of that left over from before. Regards

Re: low oil pressure STOP, oil pump?
The main kit if you don't want to frat about is:
S-X1620 Timing Tool Set VW Golf Audi VAG 1.6 2.0 TDi CR Blue Motion Common Rail 5902188472400 | eBay
You can buy the pieces separately and build up a cheaper kit (especially appealing for those on a Government budget) but I prefer to just get the kit from a decently rated seller I've added to mine anyway by getting some cheaper spare bits like the ball pins.
The bolts? Well this depends entirely on the balance unit version as there are 2 or 3 version numbers and the bolts vary from one to the other. The circlip is just an internal type circlip and I got mine from TPS for around 50p each (bought 5) but you do need some pretty thin circlip pliers to get it seated although it can be put on in other ways if you have the know how or patience if it pings away somewhere!
2005-2009 (to Oct) balancer unit is 03G103295K
2009-2009 (Nov/Dec) unit is 03G103295AG
2010 (Jan on) unit is 03G103295AK
For the K revision (77mm long follower key) there is a 5, 1, 1, 1 configuration with 4 different bolt part numbers as below.
N 10601402 x 5
N 90977502 x 1
N 91104601 x 1
N 91123401 x 1
N 90951301 x 1 oil pickup seal
N 0122942 x 1 follower key retaining circlip
The AG and AK revisions should be 100mm long follower (Allen) keys and should not be failing like the 77mm short ones but afaik VW still left the shaft hole as a 12 point spline on the earlier one of these two if not both! The hole will wear out eventually but way after the earliest version catching the latest owner completely by surprise!

THANK you sir ! I will look into all of this and let you know how I get on ! finding this item will be tricky 2005-2009 (to Oct) balancer unit is 03G103295K ... mines 07 plate bmr engine

That is the whole thing, not the shaft inside that needs to be replaced. Yours will be the same as mine and I have some instructions I made on another forum for a BMR - will send you a link.

The previous link to the locking tools was incorrect and for Common Rail engines. The PD timing lock tool kit is this one below
SATRA TIMING TOOL VW AUDI VAG DIESEL 1.6 2.0 TDI PD LOCKING ENGINE Camshaft SATRA TIMING TOOL VW AUDI VAG DIESEL 1.6 2.0 TDI PD LOCKING ENGINE Camshaft: Amazon.co.uk: Business, Industry & Science
Bit harder to find these days as the problem has moved forward to the early Common Rail engines so a lot of the timing tool kits sold now are for Common Rail engines.

Re: low oil pressure STOP, oil pump?
There is a new Common Rail crank locking tool now.

You won’t find one as it has been replaced by 03G 103 295 AK and the only source is genuine VAG but at £1408.61, that is not what you want to hear.

Oh tell me about it buddy 🤦*♂️... Tps actually quoted me £1,100 for the whole unit but I've ordered all the parts individually with the help of the guys here so fingers crossed 🤞 people talked about pistons being damaged can lead to low oil pressure problems 🤔 is that true
