2007 Audi A6 2.7 TDI

Hi Guys,

Just signed up here looking for some buying advice. I have been on the look out for a new car for a few weeks now and originally planned on a 530D M sport but struggling to get one within budget. Had a quick look on at the A6's a few days a go and quite like the look of a few, especially this one although the mileage is a little high; Audi A6 2.7 TDI S Line 4dr

Can anyone tell me common faults etc on these. I have seen a few threads but nothing has really helped, also noticed there it two tax bands between this and pre 06 models?

First thing I will be doing after a service would be getting it mapped and DPF removed, has anyone on here done this and what sort of figures have you been achieving?

Last question is regarding the cambelt, when is it due on these?

Have a look at the first few pages in this section, there have been a few threads like yours in the past couple of days.

The 2.7 doesn't have a timing belt, it's chain driven which doesn't have an interval.

Co2 will dictate the tax band so check this out and on the dvla site. Re DPF check the option sticker in the spare wheel well and if you see 7GN then it doesn't have one.

Not many red ones on the road and a decent price, weird it has folding rear seats as thought that was just quattro's that had that as standard. seems to be decently spec'd and only missing Bluetooth, which can be added with a parrot kit for around £200 if needed. Yep Chris is right there' have been a few threads about 2.0's in the past week or so....IIRC no pre 08 will have a DPF. Can I ask why your not considering a 3.0, the road tax on my 07 quattro is £280 per annum.

Spoke to the seller and they said it has not had a clutch but is still fine. Any idea on a general cost of this? Presuming its going to need doing soon.

I thought the ad said it did have Bluetooth somewhere?

Hopefully can negotiate a little as I would like the clutch doing and a full service.

Would like a 3.0 but the mpg seems to drop quite a bit, was thinking of remapping this. Hopefully get more power out of it somehow.

Will let you know how I get on.

Ad says it has Bluetooth, also has MMI High with DVD Sat Nav so as already said it is a well specced car at a good price. I guess the obvious questions would be how long has it been SORN as a car sitting on the drive not moving for a period of time will start to deteriorate and also when was it last serviced. Might also be worth seeing if they would agree to a fresh MOT as part of the deal, that way you will at least have some peace of mmd regarding the state of the critical components.

Ooops! My bad about Bluetooth! :Blush2: Depends on the mileage/type of driving you plan on doing, on long uninterrupted M'way runs am getting over 50MPG in my 3.0...but think that's down to my driving style mainly...also quattro's have an 80l fuel tank to your cars 70l. Keep us posted :D

Nice looking car... Have only ever seen a handful of red ones! Last one I seen in Edinburgh had a very short plate... 3digits! Looked stunning imho...
Make sure the AC work's fine also... Probably not something most will check during the winter! Fixes can get pricey...

Be careful about DPF removal (if it has one!) as I believe this may now lead to an MOT failure as a car is now required to have any emissions equipment fitted at the time of the test that it left the factory with

John, when did that change happen? As I had my LPG converted Jag MOT'd in July and it has no catalytic convertors whatsoever as removed them due to clean burn...passed with no problem.

Since march this year a car should fail if it had a catalytic convertor as standard that has been removed (see here: MOT Test Checks List continued - MOT Testing Industry Portal) I think DPFs are a little bit of a grey area at the moment as to whether this legislation covers them or not. Think you were lucky, or perhaps it is not obvious to the tester that they have been removed on your car as the test is a visual inspection and provided it still meets the permitted emissions criteria for the car then it would pass.

Not necessarily.....my clutch is the original and now at around 109k miles and still A ok. I'm sure there are others here who may also be on the original clutch with even more miles.
There are so many variable depending on the type of driver and the type of miles covered.
Oters will chime in with costings for you.

The service doesn't amount to much more than an oil / filter change, air filter, pollen filter, fuel filter and a generally walk round / check.
You can either get National Tyres to do the oil change for around £40 then buy the remaining parts and do them yourself for around £40 or less, or just do it all yourself for a little less.

A remap will make this baby rock. Member Ruggedscot has his 2.7 remapped and it goes like a stabbed rat, all for much cheapness, around £200 - £300

Also, any problems with condensation in the rear light clusters?
If so there's a relatively easy and free fix available on the forum if required.

Quick update guys.

Went and viewed the car tonight on my way home from London. Looks great, little grubby so could do with a good clean but nothing major.
MMI kit is brilliant and the inside is pretty spotless.
It was the owners daughter there so couldn't get it out for a test drive and it was dark but worth viewing as I was driving past it. Hoping to head back over on Thursday with the cash and hopefully come to a deal, will give it a full check over then.

Spoke to the owner and she said there is a problem with the inlet manifold and she was quoted £600 although she was still using it and said it was fine.
How much does it cost to get the swirl flaps removed on these, might as well get the remap done at the same time as turning the EML off.

Also got a quote from a local VW/Audi specialist for a clutch + whywheel, quote was £1045 + vat. Its at 98k now so will likely need doing within 6-12 months.
Seen a few kits on Ebay for clutch + single fly wheel for much cheaper, anyone done this?
Kit is approx £400 and I know people in the trade so hopefully a couple of hundred fitting.

Anyone know what tax on this could be, £260?
Completely forgot about the DPF so will have to check on that.

Price wise looking to get it a little cheaper as it does need some work.

Hmmm, Good find. Looks like they actually work as well. Is this the option most people go for or are removing the swirl flaps still the best long term?

Just pricing a clutch + DMF up and looks to be about £400 as well, £350ish for single. Will probably stick to the double though to be honest.

Would this mileage put anyone off? As is staes it has had one owner and a FSH.

Just noticed about the rear lights, seemed fine but one of them had a crack in it so will be getting replaced.

Are the wheels fitted Audi wheels or an aftermarket set?

Ideally you need a fault scan just to confirm but looking at various threads they do work. I don't think you can remove them on the A6, just BMWs.

Mileage wouldn't put me off (mines at 93k now), although looking at the DIS it needs front pads at least too and the wheels aren't to my taste.

Front pads? Are the wheels Audi reps or just completely aftermarket?

Hoping to get it cheap enough so I can got all the work done straight away. This will include the Inlet Mani, Remap, service and tax.

GC, if you look at the last few posts of the swirl flap thread Chris posted I did bank 1 today with no specialist tools and little technical knowledge, so if you're the same as me you should be able to do the pair in well under a hour. Once done you should be OK for another 60k+ miles.

Repair kit is (@ under £20 for both sides) cheap and I'd not be telling them that though :D

Oh, may be an idea to update your location, as if you lived or were buying near me (which you don't) I'd happily do a VCDS scan for you, however 'UK' is a pretty large geographic area:confused:

Any idea what these engine remap to, if there is a DPF that will be coming out when getting a remap. Doesn't seem to be many around that have been remapped. There a reason for this?

Yes I drove nearly 2000 miles with the faulty flaps and had no issues.

Remap output will vary from mapper to mapper, but I'd expect 210-215 maybe.

That's fine. Will be getting done within a couple of days.
Not too bad an increase, is there anything else you can do to these engines with out throwing serious money at them?

Just checked that Audi in question on the link provided and its coming back at £220 per annum.?

I was speaking to the owner earlier and she was telling me she had one of the inlet problems fixed a while a go to the tune of £670, whilst there the bloke in the garage said the other was on its way out. She says the EML light comes on now and then and she presumes it this after having it checked. Apparently the mechanic told her the manifold has to come off and its £670 again. Has she been ripped off or could it be more than the swirl flaps?

Its also been sat since August (started weekly but just a drive round the street) so I will be getting it serviced again once I get it to be safe, plus it hasn't been done in a year.

Hoping her counter offer is low enough to leave me some money to get the jobs done.

I wouldn't be buying it without a scan being done! It could be anything that's wrong... So I wouldn't like to guess!

I might have a look for some local garages in the area and see if they do call outs.
Might be worth getting someone down for half an hour to plug it in and take it for a run out. I know a bit about cars but a mechanic will be a lot more clued up!

Spending £50/£100 now will be a lot less painful than buying an alleged lemon! See if anyone on the 'vcds' map can help you out!?

Mines is £154 for 6m and £280 for 12m... Mines is a 2006 2.7tdi quattro..

Duggy, no it's a 3.0 diesel SE quattro with a G/KM rate of 223 according to my V5, which puts it at the K rate of £280, what does your V5 say about emissions?

I do remember reading some debate about this subject when I first joined the forum 17 months ago.

Just checked V5 it says 227 G/KM. that means the 2.7tdi is dirtier? Could it be due to mine being an allroad? Are they heavier?

Saloon/Avant/Allroad will all come into play for taxing reasons.

227 puts you into the £475 band if your car was registered after 23rd March 2006.

The revenue weight of my saloon is 1878kg unladen, so with your 9% smaller engine you'd expect 9% less on emissions, however how much does your car weigh with all that air compressor gubbings? If it's say 11% more then your engine is working 2% harder, hence emissions are up to over that of mine pushing it into the higher tax band

Am I the only one that checked emissions/tax/serviing/insurance across the range before purchase? Didn't need an estate as my dogs are small and am not in the habit of carrying large loads :) If you need your car for either of these then stop complaining and enjoy it as a saloon just wouldn't have met your needs! :biglaugh:

I checked a few cars before I even went to see them! 535d, 730d & A8 3.0TDI.... Insurance on the 535d was the highest!
