I have a 52 plate Passat 2.0 ALT engine code(5 valve per cylinder). It is a twin cam engine with the cams linked by a chain. There is a device fitted on the end of the inlet camshaft that looks like a variable valve timing assembly.
How on earth does it disconnect from the camshaft? My Esawin is not working on my pc and im desperate to get the car back on the road. Any advice greatly appreciated.
It is just very tight, 80Nm + 90 degrees which is around 100Nm. You MUST use a new bolt, part number N 105 216 01 which is £2.94. If you re-use the old one it is highly likely to fail and destroy your engine.
Thanks for the reply but there is no visible bolt etc that connects it to the camshaft. How is it connected? The part that i am referring to is on the bulkhead end of the camshaft. The part number is 06B109088C if that helps.

There is a Torx head bolt in the centre, T45 if I remember well. 06B 109 088 C is now 06B 109 088 D and costs £391.22 if you damage it. The bolt in the centre is VW part number N 105 216 01.
1 Cap. Pierce using a screwdriver and prise out. Press new cap in flush 2 100 Nm 3 Camshaft adjuster 4 Drive chain. Before removing, mark direction of rotation (installation position) if re-using 5 10 Nm 6 Chain tensioner. Only rotate engine when chain tensioner is installed 7 8 Nm 8 Connection 9 O-ring 10 Valve timing housing 11 With camshaft adjustment valve 1 -N205-. 12 Valves Do not rework, lapping-in is permitted. Exhaust valves sodium filled 13 8 Nm 14 Seal For inlet camshaft 15 Screen For Hall sender When installing note fixing arrangement 16 Washer. Conical. Note installation position. 17 25 Nm 18 Hall sender -G40- 19 65 Nm Use counter hold tool -3036- to loosen and tighten 20 Camshaft pulley. Narrow web of camshaft toothed belt pulley faces outwards and TDC No. 1 cylinder marking is visible 21 Seal for exhaust camshaft 22 Cylinder head 23 Valve guide 24 Valve stem seal 25 Valve spring 26 Valve spring plate 27 Cotters 28 Bucket tappet 29 Inlet camshaft 30 Exhaust camshaft 31 Retaining frame With integrated camshaft bearings. Coat sealing surfaces with sealant -D 154 103 A1-.
The reworking dimension “a” is measured through the cylinder head bolt holes. -a- = at least 139.2 mm

Had a look this morning and there is no cap??? In the diagram I can see that No2 passes through the gear(No3) on the end of the cam and bolts that on. How is No10 connected to the camshaft? There are 3 bolts (No 5) that hold the housing on but if I undo them
the housing (No 10) will not pull out of the camshaft.
There must be some sort of snap ring or something but I cant see it and as you said, its an expensive piece if I break it.
Hate to say that I am a qualified mechanic but just cant see how this fits into the cam unless its stuck in it!!

The N205 control valve item 10 bolts to the head and just comes off after removing the three bolts.

Thanks for your help. Don't know whats going on with this one as it will not come off. I will put it back together and hope that all is well.

I have an Audi A4 2.0 20v ALT engine, but after have unscrew the 3 bolts, it's impossible to unplug the n205 valve...
