2010 MMI 3G Sat Nav upgrade Disc
Apologies if this has been answered elsewhere (I've looked, and can't really find an answer!), but what do I need in order to upgrade the Sat Nav map on my October 2010 A6 S Line?
It has the 3G (not 3G +, as no joystick or HDD) MMI
Currently running the 2010 Map (which is pretty useless to be honest!)
And is this a simple case of swapping the disc, or is it a visit to my local Audi Centre to be relieved of vast quantities of cash?!
Also, is this disc only, or can it be updated from an SD card?
questions, questions, questions I know, but all help appreciated!

2010 MMI 3G Sat Nav upgrade Disc
Needs to be updated at an Audi dealer as afaik it needs an online connection to Germany for activation ;)

Re: 2010 MMI 3G Sat Nav upgrade Disc
Thanks Chris
I feared this.... guess I'm looking at £400 to update it then?! (I could buy 2 state of the art TomTom's for this....)
Does anyone know if it is anything more than a map update? (3D birds eye view, ala 2007 MMI 2G update?) Not expecting 3G+ like additions, but think the birds eye 3D view would be nice...
Still think that Audi UK should cover the cost of updating MMI maps until the car is 5 years old, much like they cover the lifetime cost of TMC...

What's the issue you have with the map? It'll be a few years old (no nav system has 100% up-to-date maps as it costs too much to licence). Mine (which is in a 2006 car and is the original) is mostly fine.

Re: 2010 MMI 3G Sat Nav upgrade Disc
Hi Rafletcher
Your car I presume had the FOC update from Audi to enable TMC (with lifetime subscription), which also updated the Map, and MMI, most notably the addition of the pseudo 3D 'birds eye' view on the Sat Nav?
It seems that the 3G system somehow lost the birds eye 3D view, and if nothing else, I'd like this function!
Clearly, a 2012/2013 map should be (note should be...) more up to date
I'm getting conflicting info from Audi Centres, some say it needs to go online to update, and others say it just needs a new map disc... hmmm..
Apparently, the 2013 disc is nearly upon us, and indicated 'updates' include 3D buildings etc, ala 3G+
Think I'll hold off for now, and see what comes with 2013

Since the 2010 maps the update has to be done by Audi to authorise the maps back to Germany.
Where did you hear about the 2013 updates having '3D' as this has always bugged me. I had an Audi A6 before this current one with MMI 2G that had a pseudo 3D view and when I upgraded the car (with 3G DVD nav), back to overview only - which is pretty poor of Audi IMO.

Re: 2010 MMI 3G Sat Nav upgrade Disc
3d buildings only in HDD!

I'd be happy with a 3D view lol

Re: 2010 MMI 3G Sat Nav upgrade Disc
I heard it from a very reputable source today!
Maybe not 3D buildings, but '3D' mapping is apparently on the cards, but alas the 6 digit postcode entry is unlikely to ever make an appearance (new 2013 disc is apparently very close to launch)
As I've said before, I firmly believe that updates should be free of charge, but hey, thats just my opinion!
2 Audi Centre's have told me its a plug in job to update, but the supplying dealer is adamant I just need to buy the disc at £166 + VAT from them, and put it in the DVD ROM drive.. hmmmm
On the same subject, but slightly 'off piste' - I note from a 2012 A6's SD card based Nav that the data comes from Teleatlas, which ultimately is TomTom:
Title: Europe 2011 CW44
Project-Name: AUDI NAVIGATION (RMC NAV)
Nav-Data: TeleAtlas
DatabaseRelease: 2011.06
Part-Nr.: 8X0919884D
Version: PSF50
Date: 16.09.2011
Master: P13_50_11.06
Yet I am led to believe that Navteq supply the software for Audi Navigation systems..

Thank you. If that turns out to be true, I am definitely going to update to the 2013 maps

Re: 2010 MMI 3G Sat Nav upgrade Disc
No problem
As soon as I hear any more on this, I'll post my findings!
Now then.... next subject is winter wheels and tyres... hmmm!!
Edit....
Can the Maps be stored on SD card, or do they have to be on DVD ROM?, does anyone know?

I haven't done it but I believe you can copy to SD card. Though I think the DVD still has to be in the drive.
-
Re: 2010 MMI 3G Sat Nav upgrade Disc
You can run them from SD card without the DVD in the drive. Just be warned you need time. The copy obviously needs the ignition on to work but during the copy the radio, etc don't work so be prepared for 1 hour + with no other soundtrack other than the engine, wind noise and your passengers!
-
Re: 2010 MMI 3G Sat Nav upgrade Disc
Thanks Beavim
Not sure why I'd want to run the Nav map from the SD card, as the DVD ROM drive appears to be totally useless for anything else!

The system is quicker from an SD card, apart from that no difference.

Re: 2010 MMI 3G Sat Nav upgrade Disc
Any news on the 2013 DVD update for 3G low?
-
Re: 2010 MMI 3G Sat Nav upgrade Disc
I'll check with my source, but on the basis I haven't heard from him, I'm guessing it hasn't landed yet...

Well it's out: Audi MMI Navigation MMI 3G DVD Version 2013 4G0 919 884 L. Anyone updated and does it do pseudo 3d?

Just to clarify, I copied my Nav Data over to an SD Card today and set it off to run then got bored waiting for it to finish so removed the key, locked the car and went indoors. When I next got in the car the copy had completed :-)
So I'd suggest setting it off to copy before going to bed and it'll be done when you wake up ;)

Re: 2010 MMI 3G Sat Nav upgrade Disc
Am sure the actual map data is the same for pre/post facelift, I had 2012 and it:
Didn't have my street which has been here since 2003
Didn't have Bristol Audi at their new location (they moved in 2009)
2013 update had all of these...was it worth the £200...dunno really:confused:
I do (if I'm correct in my assumption) find it a little cheeky that you have to pay Audi to enable the nav & MMI updates on facelift C7...but figure they learned they were loosing monies on knock-off 'back-up' copies :(

Thanks for that!! I'll remember that next time the maps are updated :beerchug:

Re: 2010 MMI 3G Sat Nav upgrade Disc
Quick question for those of you that are knowledgeable about these things.
Whilst I was in clinic getting my arm checked out on Monday I got chatting to one of the Orthopaedic Doctors that I regularly work with in A&E and told him about our new pride and joy (to be fair, I was begging for permission to drive, it wasn't granted) and it turns out that his wife drives an A6, and that they have the 2012 Nav DVD.
He offered to lend me the DVD to copy the data over to SD card so that we had the latest Nav data.
I know this isn't strictly erm legal, but I'm also not sure if it would actually work as I've read here that the car needs to be connected to Audi and verified etc.
So I guess my question is, will it work?

Any reason why one couldn't copy from the DVD to an SD card on a laptop or PC which would probably be quicker and more convenient, compared with doing it in-car, ?
-
Re: 2010 MMI 3G Sat Nav upgrade Disc
I hadn't even thought of that until I read this thread but yes apparently that is possible, and much quicker too. I was just clarifying the fact that you can in fact start the process in the car and then remove your key from the ignition and leave it to do it's thing :-)
-
Re: 2010 MMI 3G Sat Nav upgrade Disc
Hmmm...interesting thread. I might have a crack at this as occasionally my DVD won't read properly.
So if I read this correctly the nav in the 3g system can run off the sd card independently of the DVD?

It won't work.
The maps will copy and appear to install, but you'll get to a point where it stops and then it needs activated by Audi.

That's right. I've had my Nav system running from a 16GB SD Card for a few days now and it's working beautifully. :)

Thanks Chris, I thought that was the case, just wanted to be sure :)
I'm certainly not paying over £400 for maps update so 2009 maps will have to do, I'm sure they'll be fine it's not as if I actually NEED sat nav most of the time.
-
Re: 2010 MMI 3G Sat Nav upgrade Disc
Sorry to dig up another old thread but thought it was what I'm after...
So, I spoke to Audi and they quoted me £200 for a new 2013 map DVD. I presume this does include the activation too? I'm a stickler for wanting things to be up-to-date (and yes, I'm they're perfect customer lol) so would like the update if possible. I'm guessing we can't do it ourselves with VCDS?
-
Re: 2010 MMI 3G Sat Nav upgrade Disc
Activation needs done via audi systems, did they mention activation when you asked? I doubt that price includes it tbh.
-
Re: 2010 MMI 3G Sat Nav upgrade Disc
No didn't realise it needed the activation at the time I phoned them. Might give them a call back and see if it is or not, but like you say I doubt it.
