Headlamps general brightness
One of my customers has an Audi A6L 2.4, built here in China, he complains the headlamps after a couple of years became dim and does not want to buy new headlamps. Is there any way to make the lamps brighter? ie new bulb type or HID kits? I appreciate any help you chaps can give me.

I smell spam, TBH.

Where do most nasty HID kits come from?

Sounds a bit similar to this link :- http://www.tyresmoke.net/forum/audi-...de-lights.html
They must be trying to enlighten people ;)

perhaps give the defendant time to present his case. I need to brush up on my chinese anyway.
Re: Headlamps general brightness
Hi Chris, yes I am a British expat living in China and I am also a Mercedes Benz Technician, albeit an old one LOL. I work in a large group of specialists here in China with 42 workshops and we do all German cars. But I am no expert on Audi and a customer hit me with this question, when I asked the Audi boys in the workshop they said they tried hid and it did not satisfy the customer, they also tried a higher wattage bulb to no avail. Now I am not sure if the present system is X or H and will find out soon. If you want to check me out to make sure this is not spam, check Benzworld.org where I use the same name and have over 35k posts. Also on Benzforum.com I am the mod for the diy/tech section. Also on Benzworld check my profile, there is a picture of me.
Re: Headlamps general brightness
My tech just phoned me back, as it is 18,30 pm and I am at home, he said the lights are Xenon.
Re: Headlamps general brightness
Have the plastic lenses gone opaque? I have seen a few posts from A6 C5 owners and Passat owners complaining of this. They report success using polishing compounds on the surface of the headlamp, followed by a sealing agent to try to prevent re-occurrence. I can't remember this being reported on any C6 models, but then maybe the climate over there promotes the effect more?
A couple of posts are here:
headlight poor
Frosted glass ?
Just a thought,
MF.
Re: Headlamps general brightness
Thanks for the reply and I do much appreciate the input, but this car is 2007 and the lenses look like new.
Re: Headlamps general brightness
Recently I realigned the headlights within my body of my car... as the workshop who done work on it had not done these properly :( ...
My car had some Osram Xenarc D2S 35w 66040 bulbs which I think are 4300K...

http://i1247.photobucket.com/albums/...ps168b77f2.jpg
I had no issues with my bulbs but whilst I had easy access I though why not view and note P/N etc :D
Whilst rooting around I found out these have been discontinued by Osram... so any one wondering about lifetime of a Xenon bulb it must be high as I think mine are original so would be about seven years old :yikes:
The new replacements/superseded bulbs are 66240... bit more searching revealed this link:- Osram Xenarc 66240 D2S
Another good read link:- HiDplanet : The Official Automotive Lighting Forum - Everything you ever wanted to know about HID bulbs..
In above linked thread after the discussion of the type of bulbs/manufacturers there is a section which highlights lots of useful info about HID bulbs ;)
Quote:
According to some spec sheets, at around 1500 hrs of use, an HID bulb is only emitting around 75% of its brightness. So assuming linear lifespan (which is likely not a valid assumption, but for clarities sake we will assume it is), at around 3000 hrs, the bulb is at 50% brightness.
Re: Headlamps general brightness
Thank you and I do appreciate the help. My manager tells me they fixed the problem, but has not told me how as yet. Will reply on the thread when I get details.
Re: Headlamps general brightness
After realigning the head lights within the body... I proceeded to have the car booked in to local Audi dealer for the HID bulbs alignment checked & adjusted within the head light...
And WOW what a difference it made... and double WOW WOW when no charge :beerchug:
Service advisor hand be keys, said "Thank you sir, may you enjoy the rest of your day"....
Puzzled for a moment thinking he had forgotten to hand me an invoice... I said "Thank you, have not got an invoice for me?"....
He replied "It's under goodwill sir"...
This is twice the local main dealer has surprised me... and in good way :beerchug:
Re: Headlamps general brightness
Whats changed Gup? Are they brighter?
I occasionally get cars flashing their full beam at me thinking that I've got full beam on....just standard Xenon lights though.

Re: Headlamps general brightness
When I first got my car the lights were good regarding brightness, focus and where they hit/lit road up...
When I recently had work done to car which entailed certain front end parts to be removed so engine and gearbox would come out... they replaced headlights not as they where before...
They where so misaligned within the headlight cavity that where they were flush with the wings and had even gaps around where they met bumper and bonnet, etc they did not...
I will try and find and post the photos of these gaps, etc
So when I drove at night the light was unfocussed where they hit/lit road up and seemed to make them seem less bright/intense...
As you can understand a change in mounting position of headlights would mean that the previous adjustment for bulbs would then be out when used... if that make sense...
Hence the bulbs needed to be realigned... which resulted in light from headlights to be better focussed on road resulting in better brightness IMO

Why I post earlier was to acknowledge six_or_out's post and hope he would not expand on his post... again my view is that certain content is for PM only...
There are certain members on this forum who I have spoken to 1 to 1 on phone... 1 has met me... another I will meet soon...
That is my choice... and would think they would not reveal things about me and I would not about them...
My profile does not have my location... what I do for a living... many others don't as well... they will have their reason's I mine...
I respect other's anonymity... you/others can call/think me paranoid... but that's just me...
Even if attachments can only be viewed by a registered member there are no real checks to gain membership...
Posts are visible even without membership in most sections of forum...
If you leave enough clues the puzzle can be put together with the pieces ;)
Somebody reading this may say why join forum well I had issues with my car which mostly where solved at home by me with knowledge from posts/info on web...
So joined to sorta give back... so initially small posts... then the guides for retro fit... and later more activity than I ever thought..
You sorta then let guards down when you see the posters helping one another and end up revealing more about yourself, etc
Maybe forum thing is not for me... as I am a private person... but I've liked it so much that I've gone further with it than I thought...
I like the peeps I met/meet in this web space and compared to other forums VWAF has such good layout/content/activity going on :)

I remember that when my car was delivered, the headlight adjustment was appalling. Set far too high and I was flashed all the way home. After a couple of visits to the dealer I lost patience and learned how to adjust them myself.
In the engine bay, inboard of each light cluster are two plastic recessed hex head bolts. The lower bolt adjusts the up/down. Clockwise lowers and anticlock raises the beam. Over time, 5 years ago I found a level that gave a long enough throw but did not light up the retinas of other drivers. The car has since been through 3 MOTs without an advisory and I don't get flashed. I'm very conscious that the lights are bright so am very keen to avoid dazzling.
Not scientific but works for me.
Re: Headlamps general brightness
I seem to have opened a bucket of worms here. I have driven several Audi in the evenings, different cars and all customers cars not mine and compared with Benz/BMW/Porsche the lighting is terrible. Has any other Audi owners compared their lighting to different cars?

I have direct experience of a 5 series and A6 both with factory HIDs and couldn't really split them. The only difference I perceived was that the BM's lights bounced up and down more (with the auto levelling not coping) but that was probably due to the crappy combination of M Sport suspension and runflats rather than the lights.
I'm well happy with those on the A6 and wouldn't go back to a car with halogens now.
