Re: Cruise Control Questions
I have just been through this and the answer is , its not a DIY job unless you have a VAG-COM. It involves enabling the cruise control on the ecu, and also if you have ESP like mine does, the stearing angle sensor has to be recalibrated as the stearing wheel is removed to change the stalks.
For reference I am paying £190 at the local VW garage as they where the only people where I live who said "yes we do that" with out umming and erring, like the independent VW specialist round my way did when I asked them.
Re: Cruise Control Questions
Here's a link to a site where the guy self-fitted cruise control....
http://www.christiantena.pwp.blueyon...vag/tdi/b5.htm
You will need someone with VAG-COM though!
Re: Cruise Control Questions
I disagree with the lad above that its not a DIY job.
Its very easy The insutructions that come with it make it look complex.
took me 1.5 hours
Re: Cruise Control Questions
My point is unless you have access to VAG-COM , you can't enable the cruise control. And on modles with ESP removing the steering wheel apparently requires the steering angle sensor to be recalibrated. So while I have no doubt that the wiring and fitting of the stalk is straight forward, you are going to need VAG-COM or a friendly garage. I dont shy away from working on cars, just fitted a detachable tow bar to mine, just in this case I preffered to have it done by the *******s as they where the only ones who new what they where talking about ( yes and I know that in its self is a rare occurence ) in the plymouth area and did not suck there teeth when asked about it.
Re: Cruise Control Questions
BUT he says he HAS Vag com!
Also this steering wheel Alignment thing. I have fitted both in the Passat and the Golf as well as a Beetle. I marked the moving items so when i came to put back together they were as removed not hard to do! I bet VW do the same, there wont be any "allignemt" happing there.
DONt be put off mate just do it and mark every thing that moved with a dab of paint
Re: Cruise Control Questions
I have done two on ESP equipped Passats with no problems.
There is no need to mark anything. Just set the steering to straight ahead after the airbag is removed and do not move it.
It is just a bit of a fiddle around the ECU connectors.
Take your time and you will be fine.
Oh, disconnect the battery before you work on the airbag.
Re: Cruise Control Questions
I must agree i with you straight wheels, but marking cant do any harm.
The Barbs for the Fuse is the hardest bit!!
Re: Cruise Control Questions
Thanks for all the replies, I have just ordered a kit from VAGPARTS, so will read the instructions when it arrives.
I am still confused as to wether the wiring is different on a B5 to a B5.5 . Never mind whats the worse thing that can happen, hang on nobody answer that.
Will keep you all posted on the results
Thanks again
Re: Cruise Control Questions
I have a trade account with my local VW Garage i paid £61 all in for the Cruise. Give them the chassis number so i got the one for the car.
Im sure they will all be the same
Re: Cruise Control Questions

Phoned the dealers in Teesside area for a price as I will soon have a Passat TDI :D
Got a price of £150 5 mins back.:D Some were @ £195
1 dealer said no as it had to be done when car was new
Re: Cruise Control Questions
I paid £300 to have cruise fitted to my 130Tdi Sport (one of the very last B5.5 sold new in the UK I should think......:D.....) This was done at VW Warrington. It seems, from reading some posts on here, that I paid well over the odds. However, I am constantly on the motorway and just could not have a car without cruise, so at least I am getting my "money's worth" out of it.
PS, a lot of VW dealerships said cruise could not be fitted to my car unless it was done as a factory-fit item...... Ho-hum....... :biglaugh:

great service :D,
even got a new plastic trim below the wipers after we debated whether or not they had broken it whilst getting to the ecu. I just bought the car 10 days earlier and gave it a real going over as I''d traveled 200 miles to buy it and this item was definatley not broken.
Oh and the cruise hasn't missed a beat either
Re: Cruise Control Questions
Thanks for the very quick response.
Think I will have to book it in at the price quoted.
Cheers!:o
Re: Cruise Control Questions
Thanks Irri Tant

Hi I have just fitted cruise control and it works when I turn it on and press SET, RESET cancels it. Do you know how to increment and decrement the set speed as the owners manual does not cover stick cruise control only multifunction steering wheel (with different buttons)?

rocker switch on my car does the following
bottom sets it & top is resume last speed
press top or bottom of switch for a second or so and car will icrease or decrease it's speed by 2 or 3 mph
hold the top or bottom in and it'll speed up or slow down until you release the button
to switch my cruise of I just press/touch the cluth pedal as there's a switch on it that stops the cruise mode. Can be done with the brake also but this flash's the stop lights on.
