Help Please think i made a bad purchase!!

Hi all, breifly here is how it all went

Saw the car sunday, 82k, 95 registered 1.8T basic model/

full audi history and i got 3 months warranty which is great!

But these problems wern't noticable when i went to pick up the car

Crazy idling when cold, well generally when cold but does happen when its warm, drops to nearly nothing then picks up again, really anoying when pulling up to a junction.

clicking noise at full lock turn to the right at slow accelleration, can't work out why?

and its pulling to the left which i am certain it wasn't doing before,

Are these common problems with the Audi A4?

Either/or please let me know what the likely culprits are going to be!

clicking noise is quite likely to be your cv joint. If its on full right lock then it would be your left cv joint. Dont know if it common with audi but i've had it on a couple of other cars before.

Sounds like you need to clean the throttle body. That is the part that stabilises the idle.
Instructions for a Passat, it's that same as your A4, here:

Mine on my A4 have been doing it since about 90k..done 30k since then.. however im doing mine in the week few weeks..
what normally happens is a CV boot get split.. the grease drops out the the joint runs dry.. not mega money... normally.. if your on full right lock.. it would be the right side.. however do both.... one way to bodge the job for a few more miles to get rid of the clicking noise is to undo the CV boot.. pack with grease and re fit.. only keeps then quiet for a short period of time tho..
Best to replace..

Running rough on idle..

could be a dodge coil pack.. or MAF.. or as above..

I would get it onto VAG-COM and check the fault codes..

Luckly.. these fixes are not mega money and would be expected on a car around that age..

Pulling the left... first of all..check the tyre pressures, following that,, check for uneven tyre wear which could result in the tracking been out.... unless you have hit a kerb hard or a large pot hole at speed then something come of got bent a few mm..

Ahh thanks guys put my mind to ease, from looking around the net these issues sounded a hell of a lot worse.

It appeared the cat was buggered for the idling issue and the cv joint was fubared.

But by the sounds of things its just a throttle body and gaiter... Is it worth me taking it to an audi specialist for these parts and getting them to give it a once over while there at it?

I don't know what they charge and if it is worth the work they carry out??

Don't take it to a main dealer for the throttle body, they will want to sell you a new one for £400.....or charge you £100/hr to clean it.
If you are not happy cleaning it yourself find an independent VAG specialist who's charges will be much lower.
If you put your location in your profile perhaps you will get some suggestions.

Ill do that in a minute, but its hertfordshrie, i have a garage located down the A414 which is an audi specilaist.

To be fair i am sure i can do the work, just need to learn the engine etc!

Is it worth getting some one to give the car a once over though? as i don't know much about Audi's and would want some one who is familar with this particular model!

Yet more tinkering problems...

I noticed the fuel pump, well i presume so right where the filler cap is is very noisy, almost whistling i guess?

Also, Started the car up at my lunch break and sounded like a cat was trapped under the hood at idle to 2.5k...

This did subside after 5 minutes of driving but again raised some concern!

I really do have to get this checked over, any one got any suggestions for me? just want to have a solid car which is why i choose an Audi, which i am sure it is/will be once these little faults have been addressed

The fuel pump is in the tank under the boot floor. Turn the ignition on and it should run for a second or two to pressurise the system, then stop.

The noise under the bonnet is probably the purge pump...
Next time it's making a noise get your head in there and sus it out ;)

You can expect a few niggles on a 12 year-old car. As long as the major mechanicals are good it'll be fine.
