Exhaust gas temperature sensor 4
Hi guys
Struggling with my Passat B8.
I had my egt sensor 4 recently replaced by vw specialist due to the electrical malfunction.
After a month MIL light come on: EGT bank 1 sensor 4 range/performance.
Live data temperature readings:
Sensor 1: 161 oC
Sensor 2: 142 oC
Sensor 3: 145 oC
Sensor 4: 32 oC
Would it be faulty again? I would appreciate any suggestion. What to do next.
Re: Exhaust gas temperature sensor 4
What is the VIN and do you know what they fitted, part number, cost?

Hi Crasher
Not sure about part number but I paid £280 for it.
My VIN: xxxx
Thanks
Re: Exhaust gas temperature sensor 4
The part number is 04L 906 088 DM and genuine VW these cost £180.60 retail inc. VAT so if it was genuine and including labour it is about right, maybe a couple of pounds more than I would estimate. Genuine it would have come from TPS so either yourself or the installing garage now have the nightmare of pursuing a TPS warranty via the nearest VW dealer, deep joy and fun that will instil into them Monday morning… not. We have actually got to the point, and I know other specialists feel the same, that if we have the choice between a top brand electrical part aftermarket and a genuine part, we hesitate to go genuine if we know there is the potential for a warranty failure, the TPS warranty system is broken and not fit for purpose.

Thank you.
Just checked under the bonnet. Not sure is genuine as the other plugs have vw/audi logo and the new sensor one is blank.
Just last question. What should be the temperature drop between no3 and no4 roughly?
Many thanks
Re: Exhaust gas temperature sensor 4
hello. I'm in this same situation only I replaced mine myself (very easy job apart from the need to construct a small pit to crawl under.
I used a sensor from auto d oc was around 40 euros.
Are these sensors useless or what?

my vehicle is a 2012 vw golf 1.6 tdi. runs nicely but getting tired of having to ask favours to get the obd reader from a friend. He turned it off and it stayed off a couple of days now it's back on again.
Re: Exhaust gas temperature sensor 4
You need to get your own VCDS lead so you can be sure of the corcet info and read measuring blocks, otherwise you and anyone who tries to help you, are guessing; there is more to diagnostics than barking at fault codes.

Well what happened last time is the glow plug light was flashing & the thermostat needed changing because the car wouldn't heat up. The code was the same as this time. As I took a while to get the code read the dpf light came on. . So i changed the thermostat & this number 4 sensor , The guys at the local shop have the software & were able to adjust the values to allow a regeneration. The P246f problem stayed away for over a year. problem is I never use the car & on top I live at 1100m and driving to town 15k. away downhill. then coming home is 15 20 minutes under load uphill. Maybe my driving cycle isn't helpful.
Re: Exhaust gas temperature sensor 4
seems to me these #4 sensors are problematic whether 34 euros or 180£ & self fit or vw specialist 280£ . Am I being too cynical here? My rates here on 48 acres are 3 euros a year just for comparison & enlighten the people in the uk just how much they are getting shafted.
