hi all i am looking for a bit of advice regarding alloy wheel bolts . my son as a golf mk6 1.4s at the moment it as 15" steel wheels he as just bought some 17" genuine alloys for it . my question is are the wheel bolts the same for alloy and steel wheels or will he need different ones for the alloy wheels
Don't know but would think they are the same, only thing is you will need the special one with the shaped key to stop them being nicked. You may be able to buy these as sets of four I would imagine.
You use the same bolts, they are the same but he'll need to buy a set of 4 'locking' bolts (actually there are just a special bolt with a round head and a shape cut into them which engages with a special adaptor for use in the wheel wrench.
More importantly, won't the rolling radius be significantly different?
Not if he uses the correct (45 ) low profile tyres

Also (and more importantly), I was under the impression that bolts for steel wheels were different from alloy wheel bolts. Something about the shoulder being tapered for alloy wheels. That could be - and probably is - complete nonsense. I can't remember where I read it, so can't link to it.
Not sure about the Golf 6 bolts, but on a 97 passat I once had that I upgraded to alloys the bolts would fit Ok but were plain steel and not a nice shiny alloy type, so I ended up changing the bolts too.
Give me a nice steel wheel any day with a nice easy to wipe over embellisher disc. Far less trouble and no worries about kerbing and nice fat tyres as well. I'd like my current car's extras but without the standard alloys.
Bolts are different. I have a steelie rim as a spare in my Megane and it's provided with different nuts.
I think the ones for alloys are stronger. Also remember to get a locking bolt or you'll be back on your steelies!
