Re: MK4 Golf GT TDI 130bhp - turbo leak
Sorry, yes meant 900 rpm.
Damage was £640 inc VAT for brand new Garrett turbo which I supplied, and £400 total to garage for rest of labour and parts . They charged me £45 for diagnostics, which I was a bit miffed about since it was obvious it was the turbo, then £290 for replacing turbo, then they said my sump nut was threaded so another 35 to helicoil repair that, Platinum oil + filter + gasket, total £400
They quoted me higher price of £374 to fit turbo first, but I'd rung around and got a price of £290 from another VW garage in same chain, and there's a price match promise ad on main VW site, so made them price match the repair.
Is the Power flow Longlife III Castrol oil really much better for a PD engine then the platinum stuff? That's what I will be using for the new 170 DPF 2.0 engine, but not sure it's best for PD engine with no DPF. It will get replaced after 5000 miles now anyway.
Will perhaps get them to suck the oil out next time from local non vw garage where I get MOT and oil change from, since they seem to have cross threaded my sump nut even though I gave them a new one last time...
Re: MK4 Golf GT TDI 130bhp - turbo leak
The Platinum is fine in the 130PD and the 170 with a DPF for standard yearly 10k oil change intervals.
They did not cross thread the sump bung, the last person to do the oil change may have not torqued the bung to 30Nm but they are common for stripping. I have given up with Helicoil and Time Sert inserts on these as they leak, I only fit new sumps now.
Re: MK4 Golf GT TDI 130bhp - turbo leak
The PD 130 will get Platinum every 5000 miles, and the 2.0 170 DPF Tiguan had a service at 9200 with Longlife III, so won't be due for service for another 10,000 miles but I'll probably change it when it gets to 15,000 now. Want to change the fuel filter on Tiguan but don't want anyone to touch the new motor so wondering if I can do it myself from underneath.
Are there any disadvantages removing oil via suction through the top Crasher? I was told that it's better to remove from the bottom as bits of gunk stay in the bottom of the sump, but another person says that it's hard to get the gunk out from the bottom as well. But if I remove by suction from top, then use engine flush and suck that out as well, then that avoids my local garage messing about with the helicoil repaired sump nut.
Will keep an eye out for oil leaks, helicoil repair will be under VW warranty now I guess.
Cheers.
Re: MK4 Golf GT TDI 130bhp - turbo leak
Tiguan has to use 507 spec oil so will only use Longlife III for that, but think it would be a waste to use in PD engine every 5000 mile.
Re: MK4 Golf GT TDI 130bhp - turbo leak
I have slightly been converted to oil (Pella?) suction pumps by forum user Greg123 who is working with me at the moment as my other mechanic Matt has tried to become a motorcycle organ donor. I am resisting using them to drain the sump (even though it avoids the stripped sump bung issue) but I am a bit traditional in preferring to “drop the oil” rather than suck it. I keep nicking Greg’s pump to suck the oil filter housings dry though, quite handy for that.
Something interesting that has annoyed me though, I have looked deeper into Quantum Platinum specs and have noticed that even though it states on the can specifically that it is suitable for use on cars with a DPF, the spec sheet says
Low ash formulation to maintain Diesel Particulate Filter (DPF) performance (note: VW Group vehicles fitted with a DPF must use Quantum LongLife III oil)
Thankfully I have not used it in a car with a DPF yet so I am glad I noticed that. I was slowlu going over to Platinum to reduce costs on annual servicing from my insistence on using Longlife III, I will have to make sure the stores are aware of this. If this is marketed by VAG UK, why the hell is it not suitable for their own vehicles?
Re: MK4 Golf GT TDI 130bhp - turbo leak

Thank you,

They all do that, you would be better served to start your own thread and include your cars details.
