Hi mate
Glad you got sorted. The wheels look the business and I've even gone to the extent of buying a 5th one as a spare!
I've decided to wait a month or two and am going to go for Bilstein B6's plus Eibach's. Only want a 20mm drop though as I don't like the slammed look.
Look forward to the piccies!
Cheers
NP thanks for the pics and seller recommendation
FYI the Eibach Pro springs are 30/30, the Eibach street are 40+ and may require your front ARB to be modified, I didn't see any springs that offered as little as a 20mm drop
Oh and another cheap mod is the TT short shifter, got mine this morning from VW Speed and took 10-15 mins to fit, gear throw is now almost exactly same as my Type R and a great upgrade for £20
Might end up with Eibachs after all.
Are you retaining stock dampers? If so, I've heard that they don't last long with lowered springs - just a heads up.
The short shifter seems like a good idea - next on the list methinks!
Bit late on this thread I know, but to clarify for the record, as I've been through similar decisions as you guys recently, and probably won't be the last,
Some OEM 17" wheels were 17x7J (VW Tocattas being one example), some were 17x7.5J.
- 215 is a better width tyre for 7J width wheels
- 225 is a better width tyre for 7.5J wheels.
So both 225/45 and 215/45 could be considered OEM, depending upon the wheels. There's only a slight difference in rolling radius between the two sizes, 225/45 being slightly over the size used on OEM 16" wheels, and 215/45 being slightly under the radius used on OEM 16" wheels.
HTH
I was also considering Long Beaches for a while for my Bora PD130 Highline. Those wheels do spring up on ebay from time to time, and seem to go pretty cheaply - you have to scour hard though because people don't know their name to put it in the listing! I saw two sets go up over the space of a month (listed as "4motion alloys") and both sold for less than £200. Problem with those being distance to view/collect, condition, poor/mismatched tyres etc.
I wanted OEM 17x7.5 wheels and as lightweight a design as possible that I still liked the look of, and preferably easier to wax+clean than the standard Montreal IIs. I did consider the Siata's for a while but I too was worried about corrosion with the polished metal finish - is the whole face polished or just the rim, with painted/lacquered faces? I like the look of them on tha Bora, although think maybe the dish on them makes them look smaller than Long Beaches would?
Also, my knuckle-bruising experiences of Avus II wheels on my old Golf Match made me think that the split-spoke design of the Siatas and Long Beaches might also be a bit hard to clean thoroughly!? I also looked into the wheel weights and although certainly lighter than some of the cheap replica wheels, the Long Beaches are about 2kg heavier per wheel than standard Monty 2s. I eventually found these wheels on ebay, and am really happy with them, they ticked all the above boxes:
VW "Avignon" wheels, genuine BBS with VAG part number (I'd never seen them before but the part number, specs and appearance checked out against a German PDF I discovered on new Beetle wheels).
17x7.5J, came with new Dunlop SP9090 225/45/R17 91Y, so for £420 all-in I got the wheels for "free" (at least that's the way I sold it to the other half ;) )

I suppose they are like skinnier versions of Audi RS6 wheels. They're only 1kg heavier per corner with tyres than the Monty 2s, and nice and easy to get hands in to clean and wax. It's not obvious from the pics, but the finish is a titanium / graphite colour, darker than the usual VW flat silver, which I'm feeling goes pretty well with the blue graphite on the Bora.
I'm on stock suspension (not even the VW 'Sport' suspension), so it looks a bit high, especially at the rear, which seems common on the Bora TDIs? I'm not into the lowering-more-than-yow obsession, and the handling with the new whees and tyres is already much improved anyway, but would still be nice to improve the boatiness when cornering without losing too much ride comfort.
I'd been looking at bilstein/eibach/koni combinations but there's so much out there and I don't know a lot when it comes to suspension, so will be interested to know how you guys get on with your choices and how it ends up looking?
Cheers, and well done if you read all of that.
Post#1 = comment; post#2 = essay; I'll get started on the novel for post#3...
:newbie:
Hey,
I have just had My Bora upgraded.
I fitted a Vogtland Suspension kit recommended by Crasher, I also purchased some 17" new style RS4 alloys including 225/45 Falken Tyres.
I got the whole lot fixed by Crasher (I wanted to ensure it was set up correctly and that tracking etc was all good). I ended up with a 30mm drop and i think the car looks good. I will post some pics when i have cleaned the car.
My shopping list is getting bigger by the week :aargh4:
Dropping mine by 30mm [says 40mm on EIbach box btw], has made a big difference to the handling and barge like feel of the car, the downside is it's a bit less comfy on poor surfaces [but what else was there to expect !]
Tending to throw the car at bends now rather than crossing fingers, amazed at the level of confidence just by lowering, I doubt there is anywhere near as much offered by fitting the wider rubber.
Pity the price of fitting and the re-alignment overtook the cost of the springs , but for under 300 plus the 510 for the wheels & tyres I am happy about the return for the investment.
next on the shopping list :biglaugh:
Phase 1 - retrofit heated seats for the coming winter, cruise and comfort indicators
Phase 2 - full Milltek non-res, remap and large bore downpipe
p.s. don't tell the Type R
