In the TSI the engine is at 2400rpm at 70mph and is very quiet and refined. There's plenty of torque available and the engine pulls happily from 55mph. At motorway speeds it's definitely nowhere near as quick as 2 litre diesels cars (Mondeo, Mazda 6, 607 etc.) I've driven, but is probably quicker than the 1.6 TDCi Focus we have at work (which I guess has similar performance to a 1.6D Golf).
Personally I'd be sceptical of the 'my car does 55mpg on a run' comment though, unless the journey is downhill, wind assisted or doesn't exceed 50 mph. I think as an average, that figure is unachievable at anything approaching motorway speeds.
I've found 48-49mpg is achievable if the cruise control is set to 65-70. When you start doing 75-80 the mpg drops off pretty quickly to mid to low 40s.
Re: Golf 1.4 TSI (122) or 1.6 TDI (105)
I agree. Around town driving fairly consistently in stop/start traffic I'm getting an average of 35mpg. On a motorway journey at an average speed of 70 I get about 44mpg.
Not as good as my last car, a diesel, but not bad for a 1.4 turbo pushing around a fairly heavy car.

I think that, ultimately, my car's fuel consumption will turn out to be no better or worse than my MK5 with its 1.6FSI engine, although the new TSI engine has more torque available, thank goodness.
Re: Golf 1.4 TSI (122) or 1.6 TDI (105)
55mpg was with cruise set at 68mph, on motorway at night in good weather, im getting 36 dodging about
Re: Golf 1.4 TSI (122) or 1.6 TDI (105)
how easy is it to reach 100/110 in the tsi with lets say 2 passengers in the car?
Re: Golf 1.4 TSI (122) or 1.6 TDI (105)
mine will fly to 110 easy with plenty left
Re: Golf 1.4 TSI (122) or 1.6 TDI (105)
Yea, mine will go really well at high speeds too. In fact it seems most happy at speeds over 50mph.
Just noticed the other day a funny thing on the speedo - there is no 90! I thought, damn, they've made a mistake and I'll need a new dash, but no, once above 80 it goes up in 20s. Suppose it helps keep the speed down somehow psychologically.
Re: Golf 1.4 TSI (122) or 1.6 TDI (105)
i think im pretty convinced about the tsi! YAY! however just need to be convinced about the DSG. Can anyone share how good the manual mode is within the DSG? and how great is the DSG on hill starts?

About 2 monts ago I bought and got my 1.4 tsi dsg, and I have absolutely no regrets about it. I tried the 1.4 tsi with manual 6 speed, and it was simply not as smooth and great to drive as the dsg.
One of my considerations when deciding to get DSG was that the price of the DSG was similar to the extra-price for getting the 160bhp engine (here in Denmark atleast) and I was sure that I would be happier with the DSG than with the more powerfull engine. Also, the DSG fits the 122bhp engine very well as the engine actually requires a little working with the gears to move it, and the DSG does such a good job there.
I've tried a couple of times to use it in the manual mode, and here I feel that it is not nearly as smooth, I actually prefer just putting it in Sport mode and then the engine really shines.
Hill-starts are easy with the DSG it will hold the car (at least this is my experience) until you press the accelerator and it will start moving.

Thanks for the advice all, i have now ordered the 1.4 TSI DSG! The DSG box is brilliant!
