I know of several Golfs that have had the dual-mass flywheel changed due to this. Our DSG Passat is doing this also now in the first 5 or so seconds after starting the engine and it's worse when the engine's cold. I mentioned it to the dealer who said they couldn't find anything but I will be pushing it again before the warranty expires in June.
Let clutch up very gently in first gear. You will feel it engage. If you feel a second bump as if the clutch is engaging twice, that is play in the dual mass flywheel. If you drive smoothly they can last for ages like that. You can sometimes hear this as a sort of chattering noise from the engine at idle.
I`d been having the juddering issue, then last Friday I went out at lunch time - to see my mechanic as it goes - and when I tried to start her again, just kept turning, took ages to get it going and felt like it was going to cut out whenever I stopped. hardly any power and really lumpy driving, so dropped it off at Liverpool VW Friday evening, and just found out that it needs 4 new injectors.
Glad I took out my extended warranty 3 months ago.
I popped into VW on Saturday to pick up some screen wash and had a quick chat with the mechanic. He thinks it is most likely the DMF so got it booked in for Friday for some diagnostic testing. The car is currently starting and driving fine so I guess it is not the injectors, however the problem could just not be as advanced as your yet. I will post the results on friday.
Yeah, I got called in about 6 or 8 months ago for that
