The tensioner wore itself out because the one way clutch pulley (Overrunning alternator pulley/OAP) was knackered, causing excited belt movement. These are available separately but could be a little hard to find at the moment. Aftermarket wholesaler FPS will have stock, and can supply your local factor. Theyre made by INA. Will probably cost a bit mroe than is nessesary at Audi to be honest, easy to change with the correct tool.

Re: Power Steering - Help!
Hi all,
Just to say a big thanks to you for correctly diagnosing my alternator wheel fault.
Borrowed the tool from a mate and changed it over the new year and its running quiet as a mouse now. Excellent!
Thanks again :biglaugh:
Re: Power Steering - Help!
Hi This thread has been really helpful as my passat tdi has the exact same problem and i have changed everything except my alternator and power steering pump. My question just to check, Is the passat alternator one way pulley the same as the audi in this case? i hope the fan does not have to off the passat as the alternator is at the top? any help is appreciated! as the front end has been off twice and running out of money!!! thanks.:1zhelp

Its a similar design - but wont be the 'same'. To test the pulley, you need to get the belt off, and see if it turns both ways. If it does, its dead.
Re: Power Steering - Help!
