Re: Leon OBD fault occurring at 16.8 v
You could have a Bosch 03L 903 023 or Valeo 03L 903 023 F (French, terrible quality :biglaugh:) and it is EXTREMLY important the correct unit is fitted, we had a Caddy in from another garage which was driving them mad, a Bosch alternator had been fitted to replace a Valeo and it was very slightly different and the car was doing all sorts of daft things. The Bosch exchange number is 0 986 081 160, you should be able to get one for approx €230

Re: Leon OBD fault occurring at 16.8 v
Hi
So the thing packed in altogether the other day and threw me this fault.
Diesel (CAYC - TDI-CR - MT/AT)
DTC Description
P228D00 - Fuel metering valve, control variation - pressure too high
- Intermittent
001D38 - Unknown fault code
No fault codes
I cleared the faults and she started again. I then did a live trace on terminal 30 for about 15 mins and drove it up and down the road. It maxed at 22.2 volts!! with a minimum of 11.6v.
So I think this confirms that the regulator in the alternator is the problem.
Would you agree with this diagnosis?
Many thanks for your help on this again
Nigel
Re: Leon OBD fault occurring at 16.8 v
Looks like it, bet it’s Valeo.
Re: Leon OBD fault occurring at 16.8 v
Hi
So I have fitted the new alternator and the voltage is still touching 21V!!!!! and then the coil light flashes and it throws a code saying low fuel rail pressure.
The voltage seems to rise to 17, 18 ,19, 20V on deceleration.
Any suggestions please. I am pulling my hair out here.
Cheers

Re: Leon OBD fault occurring at 16.8 v
That is odd, if the battery monitoring unit was faulty it drops the alternator down to 13.5v if my memory is correct, which make and part number of alternator did you fit?
Re: Leon OBD fault occurring at 16.8 v
Thanks again
It is a Bosch exchange 0 986 081 160.
cheers
Re: Leon OBD fault occurring at 16.8 v
Well that is exactly the correct part (I double checked) so my suspicion would now be the battery monitoring unit on the earth terminal of the battery is doing something crazy, unplug it.
Re: Leon OBD fault occurring at 16.8 v
OK thanks. will try that tomoz

Re: Leon OBD fault occurring at 16.8 v
Ok so I unplugged it and the voltage went crazy. As low as 5v up to 18V. It threw another fault as the voltage went up. Then it wouldn't start at all for a while. I did notice that whilst trying to start it, when I stopped it turning over by releasing the clutch pedal (has to be pressed to start) the voltage went up. Plugged it back in and didnt seem to make any difference. Very veery strange.
Cheers
