Would just add that finding a VW indie that you trust is worthwhile. I used one in Sutton until I got lied to by one of their temporary staff.
I now go as far away as Dunton Green (Sevenoaks) coz good prices and the jobs I've wanted doing they've done and not faffed around.
Both had VW Mastertechs there. Dunton Green's has VAS too and only charges £55 inc. for it.

Some simple stuff (VCDS and I do diagnostics for others too) I can still do. But the days are long gone for me to be rolling around in the gutter underneath a Rover V8 P4 or P5 -- as Zollaf says much of what needed to be done could be done kerbside whey back when

A VW dealer charges an hour for VAS diagnostic; often the fee is waived if you have the work done there.
Two year warranty parts & labour too. But that does cost -- from a VW fixed-price listing.
