Grouch, I know you do the hotspot thing in reverse, and I'm currently looking at replacing my phone with an rSAP one (if Sony still use this protocol). My present phone allows a wi-fi hotspot, but also allows bluetooth tethering. Do you use the former? I just don't like having to remember to put the handset on charge to power the wi-fi. I guess bluetooth would be more efficient with the power.
My 3 SIM came up with the "not a phone" message yesterday, so I might explore the EE £1 a week SIM giving 100Mb and a just 10 outbound mins and texts (relying on cached maps). Failing that I can pinch a 1Gb data SIM from my tablet. rSAP would be a better solution with my unlimited data which appears to have no issue with tethering. I know there's a separate thread on this.
I tend to use WiFi for tethering just because the range is better and it's more reliable - but in a car Bluetooth should be more than adequate and, as you note, power consumption will be more conservative. However, the difference in overall power consumption may not be as great as you might think 'cos the power hog in this whole equation is the 3G component (which is the main attraction for using the car to do it... plus the external antenna SHOULD get a better signal).
Re: MMI Bluetooth multiple devices
Only one phone can be connected by Bluetooth. I have not yet found the setting for "If there are multiple Bluetooth devices present, all of which have previously been associated with, which order should they be connected in".
Upto eight devices can be connected by WiFi. I say 'devices' rather than 'phones'... partly because if your phone has 3.5G (HSDPA & HSUPA & HSPA) or 4G (LTE) you'd be better off using its own cellular modem rather than the cars, so it's probably WiFi only 'devices' like iPads etc that you'll want to connect.
Re: MMI Bluetooth multiple devices
The nice thing about buying a car that has just become slightly obsolete through a facelift is that here it still feels new! It feels like Christmas when my phone shows an EDGE connection (actually faster than my home broadband), and all my birthdays have come at once when I get H or 3G momentarily flickering.
Almost like the excitement of waiting for NICAM to pop up back in 1990....hoooo
Does anyone have different bluetooth profiles in the MMI for the same device? I'm often unsure which to delete.

Hmm just to make you weep, I was hanging around Heathrow waiting for a colleague a couple of weeks back and had to get on a MS Lync call so I decided to tether my iPhone. did a speed check before I connected and got 9Mb down and 1.2Mb up :) (faster than my home broadband to be sure)

Agreed, they aren't the same, I think the OP was asking about Bluetooth. In which case one as a phone and one as a media player - no point in doing more as you can't stream media to the MMI from more than one device at the same time.
Although beware if you let kids stream music to the MMI then you also get all the bings and bongs from whatever game they are playing at the same time...
