Rapport: What are your mpg expectations? I wouldn’t put high hopes on the GTDs tall figures. I came from a Scirocco 170TDI (which has no fuel saving “blue motion” tech on it at all) that I could drive pretty hard and get 50mpg (indicated, 46mpg actual) all day – pushing 58mpg (indicated) on longer journeys. I am currently getting 43mpg (indicated, likely 41mpg actual) with my GTD around the doors and about 46mpg indicated on longer journeys, driving it far less hard in an effort to try and get my mpg up. From a mpg point of perspective my GTD is a bit of a disappointment. Buy it for performance more than mpg. I’m wondering whether I should’ve bought a GTI to get an honest 35mpg out of it rather than the GTD with 41mpg.
If you do 20k miles a year you have better copes of cracking 50mpg in yours.

Thanks for that. I want the best of both worlds hot hatch handling/performance with a good mix of economy. Is yours manual or dsg?.
My passat sport dsg reads around 60mpg on a run. Which I work out around 57-55mpg. Pressing on its around 45mpg, which works out around 42-43mpg.
I'm hoping for 60mpg as the claimed is 75mpg. And 50mpg pressing on. Based on what you have said, it appears the figures are a bit of a joke!!.

I have a manual. My dad has a DSG one, drives it quite hard (he likes to cruise on the motorway at 90mph) and still ends up with an actual 48mpg every day (51mpg indicated). With the DSG supposed to be 10% thirstier and him driving less economically than me, i'd expect 50mpg the way I drive my car.
Not sure where you got your claimed 75mpg from? Manual is 67mpg and DSG is 62mpg on the combined cycle. I was hoping to better my Scirocco staright away seeing as it's supposed to be 20% more efficient and then over time once it is run in I was expecting to be around 10% off the combined. For me that means I was hoping for around 53mpg on my commute, and i'm getting about 42mpg actual.
You have far more chance of getting 50mpg all day if you do 20k miles (I do 10k miles and my commute is 12 miles of mixed roads). I have found that warm up time is shorter than my Scirocco for the water, but longer for the oil (the true measure of engine temp). This car's economy is considerably worse than the Scirocco's when it is warming up, and I have far more DPF regens in the GTD too, which kills mpg.

Autotrader for the mpg info. I think it says 76mpg manual & 67mpg dsg.
I drive around 2.5 hrs everyday economy being the key. Then once a week blow the cobwebs out of it :-):-):-):-)
Why did you buy a diesel only covering 10k?. I would of gone for the Gti :-):-):-):-).

The commute to my next job could be significantly longer than it is now (12 miles each way), GTDs hold their value a bit better than the GTIs too (51%GFV for GTI, 56% GFV for GTD – real life p/x prices at 3 years are more likely to be 55% for the GTI and 60% for the GTD with 30k miles on them).
The GTD is about a grand a year less to run all (vs GTI) in when taking all the factors into account (fuel, car tax, depreciation) on 10k miles done annually.
I think either Autotrader or yourself are getting mixed up with the 1.6TDI figures there as they are around the 74/75mpg combined (DSG is actually more frugal for the 1.6 as it has 7 gears). For the 6 speed GTD you’re talking 67.3mpg (manual), 62.8mpg (DSG 3 door) and 60.1mpg (DSG 5 door) according to the fairytale figures in the brochure. On the longer journeys you should be looking at a realistic 50mpg if you do your motorway cruising at 80mph, maybe 55mpg once it is well run in or you might get that in the early days if you stick to 70.

Sorry to hear that. I agree about the values, a GTD will always be beter than a GTI.
With regards to getting mixed up. I'm simply reading the info from Autotrader.

Guys any suggestions of extras for my GTD? I have ordered a standard spec GTD and I think the standard spec is great!!! Should I have upgraded the stereo? Or addded anything?.

I ordered standard spec. It has everything on already that I might have paid decent money for. Options are pretty much money in the bin, extras hold 20% of purchase price if you're lucky. My dealer advised that £1700ish leather enhances p/x value by £300. Some music afficianados will insist on Dynaudio. For a standard set up, the audio is very good already. Lane assist? Stay alert and stop playing with your phone! Parking aids/rear view camera? A gimmick for most. ACC/DCC? Had it as standard on 2 Sciroccos and although the version 2 on MK7 Golf is better, standard ride is astoundingly good considering 18" wheel size and compliance on the road. The list goes on.
If you want something you can always justify the cost.
