Cheers mate sorry for askin but what do i need to pressure test it and how do i do it
Re: timing belt and clutch change
Black smoke can be due to several issues. The fact that it may be chipped may contribute. Also I had black smoke coming out of my A4. It turned out to be a hole in the intercooler, replaced the intercoole and job done. I also cleaned the EGR and took all the turbo pipes out and cleaned all the oil that built up. First thing you should do it take it to a garage to establish the problem before forking out money for new parts. MAFs etc as the part on the car might be ok.
Re: timing belt and clutch change
start by doing the visual stuff first, most likely its the intercooler split if anything.Eliminate the easy stuff first using your ears, hows the power?any loss?I use a bike innertube cut in two one each end and pump it up.

Yes this is correct as with my car I could hear a whooshing noise whenever I put my foot down and also it was more clear when the front passenger side window was open. I cant remember what the process is exactly but someone once told me to disconnect the MAF and take the car for a quick spin to see if it runs better. Im sure someone here will know in more detail as I cant quite remember.

When i got the car i was looking at the egr cos i thought that might be causing it but whoever had the car before me had the pipe to the egr blocked off with a ball bearing?? i left this in because when i took it out the car would stall more easily and smoke was a lot worse too. I did bring it to the vw garage a few weeks after buying it and they gave it the all clear but they said the tandem pump was leaking and would cost 500 to fix i have not had it done to date. they said there was oil and diesel leaking from there and there is black spots under the car where i usually have it parked. I got a gasket for the pump and changed myself but it still leaks. They also brought up a fault in the maf but i figured that was because i had disconnected it to go for a spin to see how it ran and the result was the turbo did not kick in at all and the car was really dead slow. As i said before the vw garage did not say anythin about the uneven idle or anything. I though surely if there was pipes split or intercooler problems they should have noticed

Power seems fine. Sorry but put the tube on each end of what

Oh right sorry i assume the intercooler would have to be taken out to do this?
