Re: mk 4 golf
I call it a blow by test, others call it a leak down test, others a pressure test but they are all the same thing, the engine is positioned at TDC for each cylinder and held there (in gear, foot on the brake) whilst the cylinder is pressurised with compressed air thorough a glow plug hole. Then you listen for lost air through the oil fiiler cap (ring blow by) or through the inlet tract (inlet valve) or through the exhaust (exhaust valve).

Re: mk 4 golf
gotch ya ;)
Ive done some research and i could add an airline piece onto my glowplug adapter and have a go at it...
but to be honest i think im getting out of my depth. all this could be due to the in tank pump or some stupid relay or sensor... i think i've done all i can.
i'll change the cam and crank sensor (purely because i have some spare)
then I'll let crasher look over the car and see what he thinks..
... if its terminal like a cracked block im not sure what i'll do...However i've heard that all the pd heads (except the 150) are the same except for the injectors??? If so and my head is cracked, i can lay my hands on a couple of 130bhp heads and after abit of injector swapping and a skim fit that? .. (however i woud not be trying to fit it this time ! )
I'll update later this week when i change the sensors.

Re: mk 4 golf
AJM, ASZ and ARL Bare heads are the same, new genuine bare heads need a few extra parts to adapt them to an AJM application.
-
Re: mk 4 golf
Well a friend of mine (who keep borrowing me these random parts)
Has a head off an ASZ, (only took it off last night)... so worst case i can buy that off him.
If it gets into new head terriotry and no 100% fix then i may look at fitting a second hand engine, however i will listen to any/all advice if it comes to that.
however Lets look at the simple stuff first (as may/probably have missed something and go from there)

Re: mk 4 golf
Well i have good news !!!!
ITS FIXED !!!
:biglaugh::biglaugh::biglaugh::biglaugh: :D:D:D:biglaugh::biglaugh::biglaugh::biglaugh: :beerchug:
What a load off my mind,.... im Soooooo happy.
So what was it? .. Well I changed the Crank sensor and while i was at it i did the cam sensor as well (because i had them) ...most likely to be the crank sensor
I've driven around and got it nice and hot and its spot on :biglaugh:
But how weird is it that i had a rough cold start and it refused to start warm??
Im not going to use it for work tomorrow, im going to buy some new glow plug before i do any mileage in it.
Where's best to buy them from? im tempted to go to the dealer rather than GSF because i dont want to take them out ever again !

Re: mk 4 golf
Beru from GSF. Can I cross you out of the diary then?

Re: mk 4 golf
Beru hey .. any recommendations on anti-seizing compound? ...figured copperslip isnt the best thing to use?
GSF have em in stock £9 + vat, so i'll pick them up tonight.
I've already called reception steve and cancelled my appointment
I know i've already said it,
But thank you to both you and Kenney for sticking with my thread and helping me out.
Really appreciate it :)
