Common rail in A3 came in 2009.
Re: what year was the common rail engine introduced in the 2.0 tdi?
whats the difference in a 2006 2.0 tdi and the 2009 engine?
Re: what year was the common rail engine introduced in the 2.0 tdi?
Loads!!!
The 2006 TDI is PD (unit injector) ie 4 injector units that are operted by the exhaust cam, they're fired by the engine control unit.
The 2009 is common rail ie one high pressure pump that feeds a fuel rail which supplies fuel to the injectors, they are fired by the engine control unit.
The CR engine is "cleaner" as it meets later emmission standards. The PD engine is good, but as with evolution, the CR is better.
Re: what year was the common rail engine introduced in the 2.0 tdi?
Having come from a 2007 Passat to a new A3, the difference between the PD and the CR engine is very evident. THe CR is much quieter and smoother, and the DPF is amazing - the exhaust pipe is totally clean, no soot whatsoever.
"Progress" isn't always for the better, but in this case it definitely is.
