T4 2.5tdi clutch very high
I have just bought a T4 2.5tdi 88bhp X reg. The clutch is very high, literally as foot comes off pedal, thats biting point. I use it for work so is loaded up most of time, has no problem with hill starts butsometimes smells of burning clutch if stop, start in traffic. Just wondering if i need a new clutch orif it could be something else. And what is the average cost of clutch replacement, any help would be greatly appreciated
Re: T4 2.5tdi clutch very high
It could well be that your clutch needs replacing, However, before that have a look under the dash where the pedals are located, If you look at the clutch pedal you should see where the clutch master cylinder is mounted, If you operate the pedal you can see the master cylinder and the pushrod going in and out as you operate the pedal. Check the bracket that the master bolts too, If it's like mine the bracket on the pedal box could be cracked/Broken causing the master cylinder to move about under load. Because of this the biting point is altered and eventually it will destroy the master cylinder because the bracket isn't strong enough to hold the master cylinder in it's correct position as the clutch pedal is pressed down.
When I realised mine had gone (It had an annoying creaking sound) I put a wedge between the master cylinder and the floor to stop it moving., This altered the biting point a lot. It's been like that for over two years now which reminds me I need to get a more permanent repair done on it.
It's worth having a look anyway because these are a bad design and are forever going on the T4.
Re: T4 2.5tdi clutch very high
ok many thanks for the advice, had a look and all seems to be as it should. Looks like i'm in need of a new clutch. Would it be worth going for an uprated clutch as I plan to put bigger injectors and a re-map in near future. Also how much difference does a de cat pipe make?
Re: T4 2.5tdi clutch very high
As yours is an 88 bhp I think there is an uprated clutch and flywheel assembly available unlike my van which is the 102bhp version, They have different gearboxes.
A de cat is well worth doing, I did mine last year and it has definately free'd up some horsepower, the engine seems to run smoother and I am getting more MPG. I used a stainless de cat pipe available from Brickwerks. t was about 60 or 70 quid I think. It's definately one of the first mods to do if you plan on upping the BHP.

Certainly worth doing - my T4 was "decatted" & the engine was far more responsive & worth almost 10% in fuel economy. No MOT problems either.
