2.0 petrol using oil
Hello ,this is my first time on the forum. I have a 2001 (Y) 2.0 petrol passat which uses oil. As this is my first Passat (and my first petrol model for sometime) i was wondering if this was normal. the car has now done about 45000 miles, i bought it last August when it had done 24000 miles. following the last service at 40,000 (the same happened after the 30,000 mile service) the oil light came on at approx 43000 miles. i have put approx half a litre of oil in and then everything is fine for another 3000 miles or so, on average the car is using approx 1-1.5 litres of oil between services(10000 miles). is this normal ?, there doesn't seemto be any smoke from the exhaust.
thanks

Though I have never actually measured how much oil I have poured in my Passat, I would say it is similar to yours. I am quite surprised how quickly the warning light comes on, probably due anytime now.
Mine too is not smokey, does not drip oil, has no white scum around the filler cap etc. I reckon they just use the oil!;)

1 to 1.5 ltrs of oil per 10000 miles is nothing really, if it were per 1000 miles then I would start to worry, some of the manufacturers I have worked for would be over the moon with those figures you are getting.

If this is the older 8v VW lump rather than later Audi 16v one, the VW 8v 2.0 is known to have issues with its piston and oil controll rings.
Be warned, you can expect to have problems with your lamda sensors and cats.
Sorry about the bad news, it is a design flaw although VW will never admit it. Do a search and you'll be suprised on how much info you'll find about this problem.

thanks for the reply, not sure if it is the 8v vw lump or not!, how would i check? it's a 2.0 petrol on a y plate 2001, and according to the book it's the 115bhp 85 kwh model
