Re: Grinding in reverse??!!??
I'm wondering if you have the same problem I have, sorry I've not been able to resolve it yet however, I can tell what I've tested and it may help you:
My noise is almost like another gear or bearing is still engaged at the same time as reverse, the car reverses fine no problems, all forward gears perfect. The noise relates exactly to road wheel speed. I wouldnt call it a grind as you do but it is definitely a weird loud unnerving noise! And, I have had many, many cars and Golf's so I do know cars can sound noisy when reversing (before someone says its normal...)
I have jacked up one wheel and secured with axle stands, then engaged reverse, the wheels turns as would be expected and the noise is still present, this is the same for both wheels. So, I guess I've eliminated drive-shafts...
I am thinking it could be the gear linkages - at the gearbox end - not the gear lever end. Or perhaps the linkage has not fully engaged reverse and its half way engaged - I don't know?
Maybe you could try what I did and see if its your drive-shafts? - Just be very careful and make sure the car is well secured on stands and you are ready on the brake if needed!
note:- if I dip the clutch it still makes the noise - just like you said!
