1.9 tdi Alternator HELP!!!!
Hi, i have a R reg 1.9tdi (red eye) avant, almost 200k miles
having problems with the battery light comming on about 5 mins after starting.
Checked the voltage off the alternator and it's 0 but if we mess round with some of the connectors on the alt we get 14.4 for split seconds.
What is the best way of checking if it's the alternator gone or just a connection on it???
And is this a common problem with them???
Many thanks Nick
Re: 1.9 tdi Alternator HELP!!!!
if it's a plug connection,WITH THE ENGINE STOPPED, unplug it and clean both ends with wd40 or similar. give it plenty of time to dry off properly before reconnecting, and try it again.
although i must say,it could well be the brushes that need replacing, which are as cheap as chips if you can find someone who sells them, and you can solder them in yourself.
it could also be a case of soldering one of the wires back onto its pin at said connector,
goodluck,
stewy.

A Voltage Regulator comes with the Brushes complete,i`d rather renew it than just swop brushes. Also check battery leads and earths!
