turbo problems rpm kick in

96 110tdi,most of the time turbo aint kickin in as it should,especially in 1st and 2nd.the very odd time it comes in as it should in lower gears,but have found MOSTLY its not kickin in until 3/3500 revs:confused: :confused: :confused: 1st and 2nd sometime not at all!!!!any ideas.must admit,3rd poss 4th and definatly 5th it pulls as it should.also noticed its very sooty when starting up.this is my wifes car and is a totally different drive to my own 98 same model.and be4 any one says it,yes the maf has been changed.o another thing ive noticed is a few drops of oil comeing from turbo oil feed pipe and both intercooler hoses that run along the front xmember:zx11:

Maybe the vane mechanism of the VNT turbo is a bit stuck. It is a common fault.

yeh she/ ME lol, left it into an indy about 6 weeks ago at the cost of 100 quid to get sorted,.was in last week again,and i marked a few washers/nuts ect to c if he took the turbo off again,but he didnt!!!!!!!its defo the waste gate arm that is sticking.i put a post up yesterday, ahh well looks like a turbo replacement

Naah you don't need to replace the turbo. Just get someone to ACTUALLY take it off and clean all the soot out. Then make sure the wife drives it hard every now and then. If she won't then you'll have to. I call it maintainance...

i know wot your sayin,igave it a good goin over with a screw driver and loads of wd 40,PERFECT for im sure a mile,then gone again,got home,got underneath and low and behold its stuck again ffs

yep, you really need to get the soot out then. Seems like there's too much in the to do the easy option...

well i got it sorted:D :D :D with the turbo in situ of the car,thats the first time ive ever dabbled into the turbo side of things,but really quit simple.as said b4 the vanes where sticking,well only 4 of them that was stopping the cam plate from moving fully.the only hard,well not hard part but fiddely part was refitting the vane cam plate,fitting the 3 wheels,and getting all the vane lobs linned up and getting the turbo body back on with out everything falling to bits again,which may i add did so on a few occasions when tryinn to line up the lobe on the actuator,but got there in the end.fully transformed the car ive never heard the turbo so clearly before;) ;) ;) even after the knobber who charged my wife £100 to fix in the first place.any ways it took me 2and a half hrs honestly and not the full day the indy told my wife that it would take him,so if anyone is haveing the same sort of problems as we have had,DO IT YOUR SELF,as i said above it really is not a difficult task,i must add also that there is a distinct LACK of black smoke that was present be4 i did this today,plooms before,puffs after.will c how things go for a week or 2 and report back.thanks folks for your input.
