Thermostat
Hi Guys,
My temperature gauge on my 2001 polo is being intermittent at the moment and staying between 70 and 90 so i suspect it is the thermostat which has packed up.
I ran vag-com on it and there are no errors with the coolant temperature sensor.
So my question is, if i want to replace the thermostat do i have to drain all of the coolant out of the system first or can I somehow partially drain it?

Re: Thermostat
Well, when I do something like this I drain it all out anyway and flush it through with a hose. Not sure you will really save much time/expense by trying to partial drain?

Re: Thermostat
You can partially drain the coolant. Usually depends if you want to keep any for reuse, as the easiest way, if you not to worried about where the coolant goes, is to loosen off the thermostat housing and let the coolant drain down to that level. If the coolants been in the engine for some time it's probably worth doing what thedktor says and flush and refill. Don't forget to fill up with G12 or equivalent antifreeze.
