I have a 2002 New Beetle 1.8 turbo and the Automatic tranny on it acts like its still in neutral when you first put it in drive. Does the same thing when you stop on a slight incline..engine RPM goes up and it finally grabs and goes. Is there a filter or anything that needs changing? It's done this for some time..
Common failure on the 01M boxes, the 1st gear clutch is not engaging properly or it could be a free wheel unit fault if it does not have a fault in other gears. This could be low fluid level so first of all drop the pan and change the fluid and filter (09G 325 429 about £30) and see if that helps, if not it is box out and a new box or a rebuild.

Is there a transmission fluid thas okay to use in the 02 VW. I got the filter ordered, but the local Auto store didn't know what fluid goes in it..
It is just ATF, it needs to be to VW specification VW TL 521 62.

I wish it had worked on the one I was doing at roughly the same time as you. When I dropped the fluid I got 2 litres out of it, it should have been around 5. With a new filter and fluid the box was still faulty, it had been left too long.

When we dropped the pan it had a very small amount of fluid in it. We replaced the filter, and put some fluid in pan when we reinstalled it. Then took a funnel and hose and poured fluid in with car running in neutral, till fluid ran out the stan pipe hole in bottom of pan.. hopefully this is the correct fluid level??? Took about 3.5 quarts.. Anyway it sure fixed my problem.. Never worked better. And thank you for your advice.

The level should be set by filling it with around 5 litres, running the engine up until the temp on the data blocks is between 30 and 40 degrees and then taking out the level plug until it stops running.
Hey there, I have 2002 Passat 1.8 litre Turbo and it is now only capable of 4th and reverse gears. It loses power to climb and when you start to move it is sluggish until you are motoring. I don't understand why the other gears stopped , however, in your case, check your MAF to see about replacement and whether your vanes inside your Turbo need adjusting. These two things can cause your cars symptoms, as I have read about that on here and I am waiting to have mine replaced. I just think that there is further problems with regard to the gears?

The petrol engine turbo does not have vane boost control…the only production petrol engine I know of that does is the 996/997 series 911 turbo.
