hi, can anyone tell me how to remove and replace the rear springs on a 1999 gt tdi. any special tools needed?
When i changed mine i did something like this:
- Jack up car and remove rear wheels
- undo bolt from bottom of the shocks (i did one at a time IE took one shock bolt out change spring then put the bolt back then repeat)
- Then i stud on the rear axle (i weigh quite a bit) and bounced slightly to fully extend the spring. Then managed to pull the spring out.
- Then i took off the top mount (Just sits on top of the spring and is held in by the force of the spring)
- I then got spring sat on bottom cup and proceeded to stand on the axle again. Haynes manual describes using wood and a lever. I used body weight! Levered the axle down and slipping the spring and top mount into the slot that holds it all in place. I then put the shock bolt back and went and did other side!
This may be a little unorthodox but that is how i did it. I did it on a 90bhp tdi. But i am guessing there wont be much difference. Just don't level the axle too much and it could damage the axle bushes!. Good luck!
