Spare Tyre - 2006 A6 S-Line 18"
Hi guys. My car did not come with a spare wheel (Bought it 2nd hand) but a foam spray can.
I am going on a long journey next week and don't feel comfortable with just having a can of foam.
I phoned Audi and asked how much an alloy wheel would cost me. An 18" S-Line 5 Spoke alloy is £484.00 .. plus the cost of decent tyre which is £200 totalling £684
Now my question is..instead of having the proper alloy wheel attached to the spare tyre can I just have no alloy wheel and just a spare tyre?
If I get a puncture I can put the spare on and get to a garage who will put the spare on the alloy or something..Will the AA put the spare wheel onto an alloy or just put the spare tyre on?
Is the spare tyre 'full-sized' 18" ? Or what size is it?
What tyre do you recommend having as a spare? Same as the ones I have at the moment?
Thanks. :D
Re: Spare Tyre - 2006 A6 S-Line 18"
Hi,
All the A6s I have been fortunate enough to have came with full-sized alloy spare wheels and tyres - I think this is standard in the UK.
I'd be surprised if roadside assistance vans have the capability to remove and refit tyres to wheels and balance to spec.
You might try looking for the correct wheel from a breakers yard or on ebay - or even consider a replica alloy if it's only going to be used temporarily in the event of a puncture.
Alternatively, why not get one of the smaller 16 or 17 inch alloys fitted to the SE models with a higher profile tyre (to maintain the same rolling radius) and keep that as your spare?
Regards,
MF.
Re: Spare Tyre - 2006 A6 S-Line 18"
if i were you, i would buy a replica from ebay, 4 of them cost b/w 500-600 pounds WITH tyres. I have 19" RS4 style for 660£.
my friend got 4 RS6 replicas for 550 with tyres.
U can always buy a one off tyre for like 150 quid.
think about it! good luck

Hmm. The boot can accommodate a full size 18" wheel.
Audi's price is too much for a spare...
Is this okay?

Any1 know the part number for the 18" S-line Alloy for a C6 ?
Re: Spare Tyre - 2006 A6 S-Line 18"
I nearly bought an Audi A2 about 3 years before I purchased my A6. I ended up not buying it because they had no space for a spare wheel. Not even a spacesaver. And the fact that you have to take the bonnet OFF (no, because a bonnet you can pop up just isn't good enough!!! :aargh4:) to do a full service.
For the above reason, it's probably not standard in the UK to have a spare wheel.
Surely you could call Audi for a quote on a space saver wheel, basically just a steel wheel with a larger sidewall to keep the rolling radius equal?
Wherever you buy your tyres from, £200 is too expensive. £150 is what Blackcircles will charge you for a good Dunlop, Pirelli or Bridgestone and it'll be fitted within 10 miles of where you live. I am basing this on the suspicion you have 235/40/18s on your A6.
However, personally I feel sourcing a used genuine alloy from ebay or similar with pretty much any tyre on it would be the best option. If you can match it with the tyres currently on your car, that's a bonus.
Just my 2p. :D
Re: Spare Tyre - 2006 A6 S-Line 18"
The tyre price was an estimate :D
I used Kwik - Fit's website though.
Tyre on my A6 is 245/40Y18
What tyre do you suggest?
I will give Audi a ring and ask how much a space saver is.
thanks :D
Re: Spare Tyre - 2006 A6 S-Line 18"
Kwik Fit, you my friend are a sinner! :biglaugh:
I've just fitted Dunlop Sportmaxx's to my A6, they've improved the ride over Bridgestone Potenza RE050As I had before(softer ride, not so harsh anymore), they're also grippier (excellent in the wet, too), and there's been no increase in road noise.
The Bridgestones did very well in terms of wear, they did 18k on the front of my A6 and considering it's mostly a town car that's quite good. Only time will tell if the Dunlops can match it.
But I'd recommend you try the Dunlops too, purely for the advantages stated above. They'll cost you £155.41 each fitted near you, from Blackcircles.com. That's for 245/40/18s with a Y speed rating.
Hope this helps. :beerchug:
Re: Spare Tyre - 2006 A6 S-Line 18"
thanks mate. I will look into the tyres :D
One other thing. I don't suppose you have the part number for the 2006 A6 S-Line alloys?
Cheers.
Re: Spare Tyre - 2006 A6 S-Line 18"
Hi dumb question but what's the offset on the 18inch sline alloys? Thanks .. oh and I rang 2 audi dealers ..both said no spacesaver available ..should have come with an alloy..
Re: Spare Tyre - 2006 A6 S-Line 18"
I don't have the part number, sadly.
However, if you flick the centre cap off the alloy, the offset should be written on the alloy in there, marked with ET before the offset number.
Or... using the 3 letter option codes in the front cover page of your service manual, enter all of the codes into this tool and of them will have info including the offset about your wheels.
