Audi A4 2.4 SE 1998 - what to look for

Hi all,

I'm a VW golf man, but looking to buy either a b5 passat 1.8t or an A4 2.4 se, can you let me know what to look out for when going to view A4's? what are common problem areas? how often to cam belts and whatnot need replacing?

i am fairly handy with a spanner, but is this car too complex for DIY mechanics? obviously more cylinders means more to look after, but how complex is it under the bonnet?

obviously this area of the forum will be somewhat biased, but what is the better car? passat or a4? i do mixed driving including regular long (380 mile) trips to see family as well as a 5 mile commute 4 times a day during the week.

i am looking at a 130,000 miler for £995, is this likely to be a dog? what is the usual going rate for a well looked after a4 2.4?
