Golf 1.4 TSI (122) or 1.6 TDI (105)
Both will be SE spec and DSG. My first time i will be driving an auto, but all reviews sound good about DSG. Is the 1.4 TSI (122) good with a full load in the car? 1.6 TDI is off putting due to the 0-60 figures. Has anyone got either of these engines at the moment, if so would you care to give you view on the engines.
Thanks,
Sam

Also whats the best colour in this golf? and can you opt in for fogs on the SE model?

Page 10 onwards shows you what you can and can't add.
Re: Golf 1.4 TSI (122) or 1.6 TDI (105)
What are your expectations for fuel economy, and performance ?
TSi122 owners are reporting 40-44mpg overall, which they find disappointing, TDi105 owners 55+ mpg.
0-60 is one thing, 30-50 and 40-60 are real world situations and the figures that are most important. The TDi is by far the car for the lazy driver, not wanting to change gear too much, the TSi for those that like to stretch the rev range.
I would imagine the DSG gearbox fitted to a TDi would be forever changing gear, not always for the better acceleration.
Why do you want an auto ? DSG is just another thing to potentially go wrong !

Percymon, not if my TDi and others are anything to go by. The gearing is so unforgivable.
I've found you have to be in the right gear for the right speed or it just stalls. It gives no leeway.
I was coming down my street the other night in 3rd doing about 25mph, got to the bottom of it where there was a bend and a car coming round it. I braked slightly then stuck it into 2nd and the car had died.
Similarly at roundabouts junctions etc, you really need to put it into 1st as it will die in 2nd or really really struggle.
Re: Golf 1.4 TSI (122) or 1.6 TDI (105)
my tsi does 55mpg on a run, my old man keeps stalling his diesel, my tsi flys
Re: Golf 1.4 TSI (122) or 1.6 TDI (105)
Well I'm now rather more informed as I've driven from N to S Wales in a tdi105with dsg!! I've now had a different outlook, the manual tdi is a bit too tall geared in top gear and with only 5 speeds it's nit the greatest for topgear acceleration. The dsg has the benefit of extra gear and as a result you have a better set of ratios and the box doesn't hunt around much either. I still prefer the interaction of a manual but a 6 speed would suit the manual better than the current 5 speed.
Average speed 45mph on all a roads including the rush hour and 30/40 zones. Was happy to tootle along with the flow at times but at quieter periods wasn't hanging around either. Mpg 61.2!
As to engine flexibility the common rail diesels are nowhere near as tolerant as the old pd units, you certainly need a few revs to prevent stalling, put that's the price for a much freer reving and quieter engine.
Re: Golf 1.4 TSI (122) or 1.6 TDI (105)
The 122 tsi is a gem of an engine. Torquey and powerful enough to make you disbelieve your in a 1.4. Its so smooth to drive pulling cleanly at any revs in any gear, you dont get any of the diesel spike in torque just a nice swelling of power from as low 1200 rpm cant recomend it highly enough:biglaugh:
Re: Golf 1.4 TSI (122) or 1.6 TDI (105)
My manual has 6 gears and on the motorway in 4th gear it just blows everything away.
Off the mark as well it really forces you back into the seats.
Don't get me wrong I love my TDi but it takes a lot of concentration to drive, certainly different to any other diesel I have driven.
Re: Golf 1.4 TSI (122) or 1.6 TDI (105)
Does the 1.4 tsi run well on motorway? Can you feel that there is a turbo on this engine?
IF we ignore the MPG on both engines? which engine is actually better to drive with? Also manual vs DSG, i am not sure which to go for!
I had the 2.0 GT TDI (140) recently for 2 weeks, and that was one hell of a car. Unfortunately the scheme il be gettin the car on doesn't allow me to have that spec, so i have to settle for 1.4tsi or 1.6tdi.
and there i was thinking buying a used car was a pain!
