Engine Management Light (coil symbol)
Hi
Me again with my 06 2.0 TDI Sport.
I've just driven along the motorway and the 'coil' symbol started flashing on the dash. A message then came up saying 'Engine fault - garage'.
I then seemed to lose turbo, but not all power as I could still accelerate, just not as quickly as, I've said, it appeared the turbo wasn't kicking in.
I got home, turned the engine off, and immediately restarted it. The light had gone off and I took it for a quick spin and the car seems to be functioning normally, turbo and all.
Should I be concerned?
Re: Engine Management Light (coil symbol)
It dropped into limp mode. If you get a code read done it may tell you why. You could wait for it to happen again or get it checked now. Personally I would check it now, just incase.
Re: Engine Management Light (coil symbol)
Cheers for that.
What is limp mode, and what normally is the cause? Does this mean VW produce a range of viagra?

Re: Engine Management Light (coil symbol)
When the engine ecu detects a signal out of spec it stops the turbo boosting, incase you damage the engine. This is called "limp home mode". It is usually due to a turbo fault being detected. I would get a code read done.

Again, thanks.
Can I do this at home? I've seen numerous cable/software packages on ebay, and it's just that my nearest VW dealer is several light-years away from me.
And which type of cable/software would I need? Would this one be ok:

Sorry about the numerous questions, but all help is much appreciated!

-just replying so that I see any response to the last question.
I would find it hard to justify the cost of the standard VAG-COM package, which from memory is about £200. However, if the Chinese version is any good for routine fault code checking/clearing, £20 would be a no-brainer.

Rob..You can't use the cheap cables on a B6 passat. The only thing that works vag-com is the can-bus dongle from Ross-tech plus their software. Costs about £260 from Gendan or Ilexa. You can get a handheld scanner for about £90. Search on here for recent thread.
