I'm in the middle of installing an Alpine stereo in my Passat 07.
Does anybody know an easy way to run an ignition feed to the stereo?
I have all the correct wiring harness. The stereo has to be manually turned on and off.

There must be an existing 1 otherwise how did the stereo know when to turn off.....
check the wiring harness for what is supposed to be the igniton live... (yellow on the standard iso connector) and then put a multimeter on it.
must be 1 there somewhere..
Good Luck
The ignition is the red wire on the harness. It has a constant 12v so does the yellow.
I don't understand how the factory stereo ran from the ignition?
Can anybody shed any light on this.
I think you'll find that the yellow is the permanent or +12v memory feed, this one should be fed with an unswitched 12v feed that is permanently on to maintain the station presets etc.
The red is usually the switched feed and should be routed through the ignition switch and should disappear when you pull the key from the ignition.

All the newer cars with the RCD series of units don't have an ignition feed at the radio. They are switched on and off using the CAN data bus from the vehicles control system.
You can pick an Ignition feed up from the back of the fuse box, but it means a bit of dismantling - alternatively doesn't your cigarette lighter only come on with the accessory position on the key barrel?
