When i turn the ECON light off (which i beleive turns the air con on), i dont get any cold air out, its just the same temperature as with the light on (air con off)
Is it a case of needing a recharge or something?

You probably need a re gas. There is a pressure switch within the refrigerant gas circuit which will only allow the compressor to kick in if there is enough gas in the system. If you run the car at idle then switch on the air con compressor (i.e econ off auto on) you should here a click and the idle note should change ever so slightly as the compressor solenoid /clutch kicks in. (The car idle speed will jump slightly and settle back down.) If this does not happen the chances are the refrigerant gas needs to be charged but it can also indicate a snapped compressor belt or duff solenoid / compressor. Have you been running your aircon at least once a week? if not then the seals within the system dry out causing slight leakage. If you have been running it regularly you may have a leak in the system. Look in yellow pages for a mobile auto aircon guy and he will come to you degas the system and pressurise it with nitrogen. If it holds for a short period of time he can recharge the system for between 60-80 quid. If it doesnt hold the pressure he can check for leaks with a UV light (the oil in the system has a dye in it) and he can go from there.
