What should be completed in first service?.

I have a Golf Plus and as the display was indicating that it needed its first service, I took it into the garage yesterday. It is only 18 months old but it has done 20,000 miles. I was expecting them to have done an oil change as the man said that it would not now need another service for another year or so! They basically just did a check and did not change anything - no new oil, brake fluid, oil filter - nothing!! I am a mere female and not very technically minded but this doesn't seem right to me. The service schedule book is also very confusing and doesn't help. Can anyone advise me please.
