Polo 96 stalls if clutch pressed when revs is above 1000
Hi
I am having a problem with my Polo '96, whereby the engine stalls if I engage the clutch when the revs is above about 1200-1500. To prevent the engine stalling as I approach junctions, I am having to slow down in 2nd gear and gently engage the clutch when the revs reaches around 1000.
If I allow the revs to drop by engaging the clutch from above 1000, the engine will stall. This gets very annoying when parking (reverse & 1st gear) and when I am in slow moving stop/start traffic.
Many thanks in advance

i had the same sort of problem when i bought my 1997 polo a few months ago.
when we checked it out it was missing a vacuum pipe in the engine. since i put one on it doesn't stall at all now.
might be worth checking yours, as a vacuum leak will cause stalling of the engine.
good luck

I had been able to rectify the stalling problem..but only to suffer an opposite problem with an idle speed of around 1200 - 1500.
I cleaned the "flap" area of the throttle body, and seeing that my battery connectors were dirty, I disconnected the battery cables in order to clean it. Afterwards when I started the engine, the idle speed has been revving around 1200-1500.
I think it might be the engine control unit that is playing up now. But at least the nuisance with the engine stalling has gone.

Hi
If you do a quick search on this forum under "polo throttle body" or "fast idle" you will find that the idle speed has to be reset using a vag-com or similar diagnostic tool to "learn the new throttle closed & throttle open positions" that should then sort your idle speed back to normal.
