Re: Who runs and how much...
I don't. 48 on the 22nd... I'm just too old. :p
Best of luck with it though Rob, I think its great that so many people give up so much of their spare time to not only compete in the race, but complete all the prior training that goes with it. And its all for charity! :)

Re: Who runs and how much...
I run and I turn 50 in August.
I've done one marathon (Glasgow in 1984), and loads of half marathons and 10Ks.
If anyone wants to start running I suggest you do a 10K (6 miles) and see how you get on before trying to do a marathon. A marathon is a seriously long distance and you feel like s**t for a week afterwards.
10ks are easily manageable and then its just a short hop to a half marathon. One of the most enjoyable races I have done is the Great North Run (Half marathon)- the atmosphere is fantastic and its very well organised.
Re: Who runs and how much...
I run anything up to 15 miles a week. I'd like to do the 1/2 marathon one day, but like weeleigh says, the 10k is the first step. The best bit about running is listening to the Rocky theme tune :biglaugh: :biglaugh: :biglaugh:
Re: Who runs and how much...
I cycle because running makes my knees hurt :(
Rob, get yourself a Just Giving page, I'm sure the wonderful VWAF members can find it in their hearts to throw you a quid ;)
Re: Who runs and how much...
Hooray, I was beginning to think I was the only one, I aree with doing a 5K first then a 10K before the leap to 1/2 marathon or more. I picked a Half marathon because I used to run at school to natoinal level, 1500m and cross country, and I've never run past 10K. I gave running up and went cycling at 16.
After 20 years getting back into it was tricky, Mind knew how to run, body had forgotton:Blush2:

Re: Who runs and how much...
I've recently started going to the gym once a week. I know it isn't much, but i'm working on short 2k jogs. I'm managing to do 2k at a steady 9kph without dying. I want to get to 12kph an hour. I tend to do 2k, then some weights, then however much more i can stomach, usually another 2k or so.
I really should jog before work, but i'm really self conscious about it.. :(
Re: Who runs and how much...
I know age is no excuse but now I'm well into bus pass territory it's walking or gentle cycling on my veteran cycles. Seems to work for me,
I've managed to lose over a couple of stones over the last 4 months. Eating smaller portions as well, although not actually given any particular food up. Do you running types have to stick to a special diet or the like?
