What is Phone Prep Low/High
Can someone tell me what the difference is between Phone Prep High and Low. I have a 55 plate A4 with RNS-E version 650 F/ware. However when I select the phone button then set-up there are no options. I assume that I have Low from this.
I currently have an iPhone but can't upload contacts, it was also the same on my previous phone, a Sony Ericsson for which I had a cradle.
I have read a few posts and people keep going on about Phone Prep High or Low.
I also don't have a Multi Function Steering Wheel. Do I need one?
Re: What is Phone Prep Low/High
From What I Can Rember The A4 Has Universal Hands Free Or Bluetooth With Cradle For Aerial And Charging And Full Bluetooth Where The Car Takes Over Full Sim Control Inc Aerial Functions From The Sound Of It Your Car Has Universal Hands Free Withouht Voice Control. The Iphone Will Work Wiyh Audi Bluetooth But Can Have Limited Functions And Somtimes Wont Connect At All Funny Old Thing Technology
Re: What is Phone Prep Low/High
The version of the Bluetooth module can affect interoperability. The early versions don't play ball fully with the RNS-E. It sounds to me as if you have an early BT unit.
The RNS-E can be updated to the latest firmware (which you have) by using the latest map disc but the BT unit can't.
What happens when you get an incoming call? What is displayed and where?

The RNS-E goes to telephone and shows accept or cancel. The caller is also shown on the RNS-E and DIS. When I had the cradle attached on my previous phone I also had a Press to Talk facility, this worked by pushing the button on the Gen II cradle.

Is just the callers number shown or is their name shown?
With a MFSW you get a PTT button... Without a MFSW or a cradle you can only accept the call through the RNS-E...
Do you have access to VAG-COM? If so, what is the revision of your telephone module?
Also, do you have a colour DIS?
Re: What is Phone Prep Low/High
If it's in the phone the name is shown. My DIS is a colour one.
I can get access to a VAG COM but that will have to be next week or in the new year as it is a colleague at work that owns it.
Do you know what version telephone module I need?

Can you dial a number from the RNS-E?

No, this is what I expected to be able to do when I first got the cradle for my Sony-Ericsson W810i but then the paperwork said that some functions were not available for this phone. I then expected it to work when I got my iPhone, linked via BT, alas no such luck.
Re: What is Phone Prep Low/High
If you can check the Bluetooth module version with VAG-COM(or by physically looking at the label on it) it sounds like you might find that it is revision D. This doesn't work properly with the RNS-E from what I have read on the internet.
If it is revision D, your options are now to either live with it or buy a new BT unit from Vag Parts or the like...
I have a SE K850i with an 'M' revision BT module (retrofitted - picked up on Ebay for £150) and on my (retrofitted) RNS-E I can dial a number, access my phone book, recent calls, missed calls, call my voice mail, signal strength and mobile operator are displayed on the bottom of the RNS-E as well.
The integration is very good so if you are planning on keeping the car it could be a worthwhile investment. Put your old unit on Ebay to cushion the cost...
Please check what I have told you either by speaking to your dealer or on audiforum.us which is where I found all information relating to retrofitting my kit. There are some familiar names over there.

Thanks for all the info Fm
To be honest I'm begining to wonder if it is worth doing as I won't have the car for a long time as I do 18K a year.
Priced up an updated BT unit and MFSW and the cost came to just short of 1K fitted.
I'm a bit of a dissapointed as the car cost over 35K new and it was inferred that all this would work.
