When the heater is set to 'Fresh air' it "rattles" BUT
if it is re-set to 're-circulating' the noise disappears.
I am informed that this noise is caused by a faulty 'diverter motor' which needs replacing.
The part number is 1J2907511A. How easy is it to remove the 'control valve/motor?
Can I do it without removing the complete heater unit?
Any help on this problem would be appreciated.

The motor is fairly easy to remove, but it will require the removal of the glovebox and in my case, some plastic covers for the ducts. I have a spare motor (removed from my car cos I sealed the flap dead as I do 99% city traffic) if you are interested, exact part number.Quote:

Depends on weather it's clima or manual aircon as well.
I changed the V71 on my clima equiped Golf TDI. It's right up on the left hand side of the heater assembly, you can't even see it !! .... but
It is do-able. Once you've got the new one you will see how it's attached i.e. single screw. Make sure you have a nice sharp flat screwdriver to separate the actuator rods from the motor etc and don't bother try to mess about aligning the flaps as per the Bentley and or Erwin guide, take the blower motor out and position / wiggle the flaps / actuator rods that way.
Access is really tight and tricky but it can be done but I understand a little easier on manual air-con cars.
Don't get fobbed by a dealer or anywhere else in them saying the dash has to come out, it DOES NOT !
