clutch problem

it was frosty this morning and about a mile in my trip to work i found i could not change gear the clutch pedal was at a lower position than normal so it only travelled about half its normal distance meaning the clutch would not disingage i managed to get it to work by which time i was able change gear again so could get out of second but travel on pedal still short
one of my work mates checked pedal and after pressing down and pulling all the way up it returned to normal position and is working ok now
but what was the cause and how to stop it happening again is the question.

If it is a five speed then it is usually the master cylinder which is not that bad to do. If it is a six speed it could be the slave cylinder and that means pulling the box.

its a 6 speed, so you are saying the slave cylinder is faulty rather than iced up linkage as it seams ok now, sounds like more expense another item to add to the list for after christmas

If the problem comes and goes then that is a common symptom of concentric release bearing failure. There is no linkage, it is hydraulic using the same fluid as the brakes and can’t freeze in our temperatures unless it is extremely heavily water contaminated. Have the system bled if the problem persists. I always do the master cylinder first but on six speed cars it is the slave cylinder most of the time. Obviously with how difficult the slave is to do, you still do the master first.

i take it the bearing you refer too is in one the cylinders, the fluid was changed with service in May done by garage
hope does not fail while i am in england next week with it

My clutch pedal does the same thing, it did it tonight before setting off to work (Its always before I start the engine). I just lift it back into its up position and it behaves OK again then. The pedal only does this now and again - possibly once every two or three months or so. Could this also be the master/slave cylinder at fault?

The release bearing and slave cylinder on cars with the 02M 6 speed box is what is commonly called a concentric release bearing or concentric slave cylinder (VAG call it a “release bearing with hydraulic operation”) and is an all in one unit that means the box has to come out to change it. Whilst it is out it makes good sense to change the clutch and flywheel. The VW part number is 0A5 141 671 and they cost £40 from VW.

Its been doing it for a good three to four years.

This happened to my car this morning, the clutch went down and stayed down, I pulled it back up and it works fine.

Is this something that can be lived with for a while, and just having to pull it back up up when it does it, or is it likely to fail completely?

How much for a dealer to fix?
