B5 Handling / Suspension Question
Hi,
I have to admit I'm mightily impressed with my B5 TDi 110 SE Passat. Goes well, quiet, comfortable etc...
But the handling and general stability I think is poor.
Came from a Renault Laguna, which felt very sure footed and handled well...
Basically the Passat seems very "floaty". It almost seems like you have to concentrate constantly to keep it in a straight line and doesn't inspire confidence.
I've had the tracking checked and adjusted to 2.0mm toe in as per spec and it made no difference and also checked all tyre pressures etc.
Suspension seems in good order.
Is this normal for these cars?
If so, would a suspension kit (lowering kit :aargh4:) help?
Or is this more likely to be geometry?
Thanks!
Re: B5 Handling / Suspension Question
They do tend to feel a bit "boat like", a suspension upgrade would definately improve matters I'd say. ;)
Re: B5 Handling / Suspension Question
Hi (Is this normal for these cars?) NO,most definitley,if the car as you say is floaty, then there is something wrong. If the vehicle alignment is within the specifications, then i would suggest an other brand of tyres,
Re: B5 Handling / Suspension Question
My mates 1.8T drives exactly as descibed and he's unaware that it feels vague but everytime I drive it due to the ride of the VR6 or the S3 it feels boat like and wallowy. I think it's being emphasized by the switch from another motor.
Re: B5 Handling / Suspension Question
Tempted to try some lowering springs and a set of 16" alloys!
Keeps it comfy but should improve things.
Re: B5 Handling / Suspension Question
i didnt think lowering springs were an option on the b5 models , maybe only the sport as i think its got proper suspension unlike these daft link arms rolling around in rubber.
is a front strut brace an option on the b5.

B5 has a few options...
Koni do a sport kit and a street kit.
I'm sure KW and Weitec do as well...

yes but at quite a cost i'd imagine. something vw should fit as standard and not this mickey mouse stuff. at speeds above legal mine practically looses steering control ,like its lifting at the front end, its a shame as the car is a star.
Re: B5 Handling / Suspension Question
I have a Koni sport kit which lowered me by around 35/40mm.
High side winds were scary and it's a fairly common complaint.
EDIT:
B5s with the "Sport" trim benefited from slightly lower/stiffer suspension and the odd few had factory installed upper strut braces, though I've only ever seen one on a UK B5.
You can retrofit the suspension from the Sport models - you'll need to ask your dealer for the "1BE suspension upgrade"

Did you find the kit made a big difference?
