10 days head sratching, changing parts (electrical). Always had a spark but not very strong. Changed coil and all is good. the way i tested is hold ya coil lead away from electode in dizzzy cap, spark now arcs across with a cracking noise holding about half inch away, before it had to be connected. The spark on the plugs was there but turns out to be very weak, Makes the world of difference. Be careful not get a shock, makes ya dance about bit, ouch.
A bit crude but it is a reasonable indicator of a faulty coil so long as you take great care to avoid getting a jolt. Garages have special synthetic pliers for holding the leads because, on modern electronic ignition systems, the shock delivered can be fatal. It is not wise to just rely on holding the lead.
It is a crude way to test for a good spark yes i agree, I am not saying it was defo the coil but made the world of differance to my spark. I was lucky that if coil didnt work i could send it back, who ya know and all that. True that fatalities are rare but so is the number of people that get a full jolt from a car ignition system. Conventional ignition systems are not so much of a problem because they only produce a low-energy pulse that peaks around 20,000 volts. However, modern electronic systems (including add-on systems) deliver a high energy pulse at 25-30,000 volts and they really can be fatal, especially to anyone who has a weak heart.
