Safe to drive with a dying clutch?
I drive a MK5 Golf 1.9 TDI.
My clutch seems to be nearing to the end of its life...
The bite is really high and the car seems to shudder more when taking off from bite.
Today there was a bad burning smell I assumed it is from the clutch.
I need to go to uni tommorow.
I wanted to know what is the worst that can happen if the clutch was to go on the motorway?
Re: Safe to drive with a dying clutch?
If the clutch pressure plate shattered at high speed it would easily destroy the gearbox and flywheel. If you were very unlucky it could take the crankshaft (therefore the engine) with it!
I wouldnt risk it, get it repaired ASAP.

A tow back off again and the bill to repair.

Yeah it wasnt much of a decision
-Drive MK5 and possibly receive a hefty bill
-Drive uninsured and get banned
-Or take the long boring train...
Train it was :(

Not nice but better than an hour wait on the hard shoulder and a hefty recovery/repair bill and on the other hand 6 points min. and a large fine for no insurance. :aargh4:
