1988 Audi 80 1.8S will not start
Hi there
There seems to be very little info on the web on fault finding an ignition problem I have on my 1988 Audi 80 1.8S (Carb model). I was driving it up a long incline in 3 gear at highish revs. A short distance down the road later the engine died and refused to start since.
There is no spark and I changed the ignition switch module and have followed the checks as per Haynes manual but I am nowhere nearer to pinpointing what the problem is. Any have any ideas??
The timing belt is not broken and it is getting fuel but there is no spark. Ignition coil measures OK. Confused!!!!!

Have you checked the dissy cap and rotor?

i have a 2.0E audi and mine refused to start, had it towed and put on a computer they found the grey and blue fuel sensors had gone.
it was basically flooding the engine with fuel and not adding any oxygen so wouldn't start.

Yes I have but all seemed OK there. I did not dismantle it to check hall sensor and hall rotor but I have never heard of those giving trouble!!!

Your car would have a different setup to my carburettor model. Thanks for the reply all the same

HI, had the same model myself a few years ago.If no spark and ignition unit replaced it could be distributor. No debris lying around intrnally to block hall sender?I have a few tests you can do: Take Ohm readings of Coil on Term 1 and 15,primary windings, should be 0.52-0.76 ohms. Then do Term.15 and the HT output to Dist.should be 2400-3500ohms.
On the switch unit(drivers footwell,by throttle pedal),connect voltmeter to Term 2 and 4,should be battery voltage.Next reconnect plug.On Ign.coil.connect volt meter to Term 1 and 15,switch on ignition and it should fead 2V dropping to zeroV after about 2 seconds. If not, renew switch unit.Connect a wire briefly, between centre terminal of the Dist.Wiring Plug
and earth. The voltage should rise briefly rise to 2 volts. If not check the centre terminal wire for open circuit for open circuit,or replace switch unit.On same plug, check outer terminal voltage, should be 5 Volts
To check the Hall Sender,on the switch unit inside the car,Rerminals 6 and 3,check voltage, ign,on,leaving the plug STILL connected.Turn the engine over slowly, observing volt meter, volts should alternate between 2 and 0 volts.
Well, i hope that info helps!!! any more probs let me know !

Thanks for that, it is the same as I got from the haynes manual but by trial and error I had a spare distributor and the ignition came back after replacing the hall sender. I have not got a carb problem which I have another thread on here at the moment
