Luggage Compartment Light not working

Hi i have just bought a 1998 Passat Estate Sport 1.9TDi Sport.. the luggage compartment light does not work, have changed the bulb - still does not work. I take it that when you open the rear door it should come on? All the other interior lights work. Please can anyone advise?

this seems to be a common fault across the mk4 range.... i havent seen a single post with a definitive answer yet im afraid! i have the same fault in my golf but its one of those things ive learnt to live with. the only thing i can think of is if the wire wears over so long. im going to take a look at mine later with a voltmeter, see if theres any draw, if not i guess it would be the wiring at fault, as ive checked all fuses bulbs etc etc. if thats your only fault, be happy :biglaugh::beerchug:

Just thought, wheres the sensor for the rear door to detect that the boot is open? Could check if that is working properly...
