ABS Control Unit Failure - Touran
Hi all,
I've got a 2003 53 plate VW Touran 2.0 TDi Sport - exceptional family car, and use it for towing...
However, it has without doubt been the most unreliable car I have ever owned - and even as a loyal VW fan (5 previous VW's), I am now turning away from the brand as a dissatisfied customer. Not only with the cars relaibility, but with the VW networks inability to cope with anything other than routine servicing.
Over the last 3 years I have had.
Engine rebuild for oil way repair between head and block - which was leaking oil into the cooling system. (fortunately under warranty), this was found after 3 coolant bottle exchanges and an oil cooler replacement failed to solve the problem.
Air inlet flap motor failure ~ £400
Rear boot locking mechanism failure ~ £90
Complete electrical failure of the electrical distribution power module and ancillary damage (caught fire) ~£1400
ABS Control unit replacement now required ~£1400
The latest failure in the ABS control unit is actually coming up with a brake pressure sensor failure - which I've been told is bonded into the ABS control unit making a wholesale replacement necessary. VW have the part retailing at £950 + VAT before fitting - ouchhh!.
The ABS works fine - I've just lost the ESP..and this seems like a heck of a lot of money for a pressure sensor failure??.
Does anyone know where i could get it refurbished? or a cheaper work around..
Looking around the forums, this doesn't seem like an uncommon failure..
For those of you with newer Tourans still under warranty - I'd say make sure you extend it.... my experience has been a painful and expensive one... even going to an independant specialist, the VW parts are just so expensive and the control system so unreliable...

Just had mine replaced under warranty, otherwise £1400.

I've got a Touran & know exactly what you mean, my last two VAG cars were bullet proof but this latest car has had thousands spent on repairs (luckily under warranty and it's a lease anyway) but it's putting me off the brand overall.
I used to recommend them to friends/family but I wouldn't anymore, too much hassle - better to stick with japanese reliability now.
On the otherhand we are driving the first in the 'next generation' of cars, could your last car take control of the brakes/steering before a crash? Could youR last car parallel park itself? My last car was luxurious because it had ABS and aircon - steering that compensates for cross winds was impossible! All this technology comes with a price, especially for 'early adopters' which is what we have become.
To put it in perspective, when you were a kid the si-fi fantasy cars of the future were able to do what our Tourans do - but those films didn't show the ABS control unit being replaced every two years or having to hard reset the CPU to get the dashboard working.... it does makes me wonder when VAG are going to introduce their first hover car!

Hi guys there is much on this ABS pump failure problem on the Golf MK5 forum, the Golf Plus forum and even on the Touran club website www.clubtouran.net
It all seems to associtaed with a particular variant of the ABS pump , the Mk60 which is common to Tourans and Mk5 Golfs from 2004!
Many are exploring rebuilds or recon units etc. and you can find more information at the places I have indicated.
I have the same problem with my 54 plate Touran.
