Quirks and Queries
Hi all,
Well i'm in to the fourth week of owning my audi and have come to enjoy it immensely. The annoying part is that the missus has as well which means we are continually disputing who's going to drive! Never used to happen! :D I just have a few questions that i wondered if any of you knowlegdeable sorts would be able to answer. It's a 2000 A4 1.8T quattro sport
1. There is an inconsistent rattle comming from the climate control area...what is it and does it need fixing?
2. when the car is on, as well as the rattle there is a rythmic sort of beep going on. It not loud but you can hear it...again i wonder what it is and is it a problem?
3. Does anyone know what the quattro distribution is between front and rear? Does it even work that way?
4. Can anyone tell me how to figure out if my cam is chain or belt driven?
Thanks
Stu

Re: Quirks and Queries
Congratulations on purchasing a fine car!
Not sure about questions 1 to 3, sorry, but on my '99 model (also a 18tqs) it is belt driven - had it changed at about 70k, just after I bought the car. Hope this helps!

Re: Quirks and Queries
Thanks. It is an awesome motor. Noticed that you've listed yours at 180 bhp...how do you know that?

Re: Quirks and Queries
I think the quattro sports are all 180? to compensate for 4wd drivetrain losses?

Re: Quirks and Queries
It was a while back, back I was probably told by Audi, or looked it up on the web. The B5 chassis 1.8tqs had 180bhp, while the non-quattro 1.8t had 150bhp. If you have a 2000 model, I think it would also be a B5 so have 180bhp. The B6 chassis and onwards had other variants of the 1.8turbo engine, 163 and 190 I think, both with and without quattro.

Re: Quirks and Queries
If you want a bit more... the ECU can be easily re-mapped on these turbo-charged engine, costs a few hundered quid. From reading other posts, it can be increased to around 200 to 220 bhp without any mechanical changes; good increases in torque levels too. A few of the site sponsors do it if you're interested...

Re: Quirks and Queries
all b5 1.8t quattro's are 180bhp, but well worth getting them chipped,
1.8t has timing belt and internal chain to time second cam, but never heard of anyone have any problem with chain
quattro on these is 50/50 i think, and purely mechanical, unlike a3 system
