I purchased roof bars at a supermarket in France for my B5.5 several years ago (had to find somewhere to put the luggage so I could fill the boot with wine), cost the equivalent of 30 quid and the build quality (own brand, I think it was a "L`Clerc" supermarket) is brilliant, much better than the Thule bars I`ve just bought for my B6 estate,

They clamp on to the roof (if you open your doors you will see a couple of arrows where the roof panel wraps under the door apertures), use the small strip on the roof as a guide, and when clamped and locked are very secure.

I`d make sure you buy a decent make, as full box can exert considerable forces, and you neither want to lose the box or damage your car with inadequate fittings.
