rattling noise offside wheel
Recently purchased audi a4 (2002) and im starting to hear a rattling noise from the right side wheel. This happens when i am goiing at around 30-40mph. Ive been told it could be the wheel bearings, can anyone tell me if it is the wheel bearings if not then is it a serious problem?
Thanks...
Re: rattling noise offside wheel
From what you've said I believe mine has the same problem. It sounds the same whether in gear or not and is only audible above about 25mph. I think I even turned the engine off while rolling to test. It sounds like a metallic "jangling" sound like something lightweight and metal swaying around, but I have no idea what it is. What with the Audi's excellent sound deadening, I can only hear it with the window down too.
Mine is a 2000 1.9tdi :dunno:
Re: rattling noise offside wheel
i got the same jangle from left rear matt, like a metal chain is dangled off some thing. on the same side the wheel speed sensor is malfunctioning, maybe due to same fault. uou any closer to solution?
Re: rattling noise offside wheel
I had a rattle at slow speeds, turned out to be a snapped spring, might be worth a look! Also check any link bushes on the suspension. Does it happen just when rolling? or when hitting bumps?
Re: rattling noise offside wheel
doesnt sound like its to do with spring as it is while rolling, i could prob hear it while jacked up if i could spin wheel fast enough. its defo the same fault as thewmat above
Re: rattling noise offside wheel
My spring made noise pretty much all the time, the lower section had snapped off and got caught inside the main section thus rattling even when idling! Excuse to get all new springs and shocks though so i wasn't complaining :p
Re: rattling noise offside wheel
wheel bearing makes a grinding sound, try jacking up and spinning if its a rear one but with fronts you probably wont be able to spin fast enough, you can try a few swift lane changes, if noise lessens while weight is shifted its probably bearing, garage job to replace a front one unless youve got access to a press
Re: rattling noise offside wheel
Have you checked the simple things like the wheel bolts are tight?
Re: rattling noise offside wheel
Yeah it's not the wheel bolts. Lots of suggestions which I could look into, but one thing at a time at the mo I guess. Still dealing with a now intermittent power issue, even after replacing the air mass meter and have a split CV boot with a rumbling on turning and some other things too. I had to take the rear bearings apart when I replaced the brake discs, but my sound sounds like it comes from the front anyway, so God only knows.
Although it started as someone elses thread... thanks for the replies aimed at my post.
Re: rattling noise offside wheel
Hi there,
Does the noise occur when going around corners, particularly when turning right when the noise is on the front left..for example?
If it is a clacking noise, it may be your CV joint. The fact that your CV joint boot is gone may mean that you have got some grit into the boot and it has damaged your CV joint.
Worn bearing usually emit a grinding noise
